First steps in undertaking home renovations?

I've recently moved to London from abroad and have purchased a house that's in need of fairly extensive renovations (roof overhaul, chimney removal, bathroom and kitchen renovation, and eventually a rear extension).

I'm looking for advice on what the first steps would be to find a contractor(s) to undertake this work. Should I speak to an architect (or project manager?) first, to give them an overview of the different pieces of work that need to be done, and see what my options are? Or should I speak with a building company straight away?

Also - if anyone has any recommendations for contractors in SE London, they'd be most welcome!

Thank you

Hi,

Congratulations on your new house!
I am no expert, but am getting renovations done at the moment.
First step would be to look at what needs doing and estimating how much it will cost. There are websites which can help you do that. You'll also need to find out if you will need planning permission and if there are any restrictions. Next, if you know what you want to get done, you'll need someone to draw plans for the extension. This doesn't have to be an architect unless you want their design input.

This is what we did anyway - I hope to helps. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong or overlooking something.
