Moving to Stratford Upon Avon

Hi, Does anyone live in / around Stratford Upon Avon?

We're looking to move and buy a house for DH's job, but we don't really know the area. Can anyone share any insights on what Stratford is like to live in, whether there are any areas to avoid etc.?

We've visited at weekends and the centre seems busy, is this mostly tourists or locals? Is it the same all week or just weekend visitors?

The river seems to divide the town in half, with houses being more expensive on the south side, does anyone know why this is?

We were thinking maybe Bishopton or Clopton would be places to start our search (good road links), are they ok areas?

We don't need schools yet, but if there are any areas where we should be wary of schools / its difficult to get a place that would be good to know! Thanks

Commenting on this because I’m in the same position!
Looking around the Bishopton area too - have you moved there now? What’s it like? X

I’ve been to a few RSC productions and had a wander around town. Very nice place. I think that Leamington Spa is not far either, so maybe consider that too?

Stratford is a lovely town, great schools including grammar schools

Also really nice villages around : Ettington, snitterfield etc

Do you want to live in Stratford specifically or also considering nearby towns? Eg Warwick/Leamington/Kenilworth, Henley, Alcester etc?

We lived there about 15 years ago....in my opi ion even the outskirts and so called rough areas were not...not by my standards. Some lovely villages and Stratford is fab...like living in a little bubble ..we have lived in lots of places and it is one if our faves.

PP is right, even rough areas aren't as rough as in a lot of places. Personally I'd avoid bishopston/off Birmingham road, some not as nice areas (Justin's Avenue) and traffic past the maybird is generally quite heavy.

Trinity mead is a large newer build estate, goed is waves of popularity, right now it's very popular.

Banbury road area is more expensive and popular, never really understood why. Alcester road is cheaper and has some pockets that aren't great.

Depends what you're looking for really and what your budget is.

In normal/non covid times it's very busy with tourists all week through the spring/summer/early autumn, winters are quieter but still a good number of people. A lot of tourists from overseas and day trippers from London & Birmingham.

The town is very much catered towards tourists and there's limited activities for older children.

Someone suggested leamington as well, lovely town but even more expensive for houses than stratford. Lots of lovely village around if you don't need to be walking distance to town you'll get more for your money.

I was thinking about bishopton as it seems to be a walk away from Stratford Parkway & the town centre. We’re moving from Birmingham - just want a change but that’s not too far and I love Stratford haha. But yeah when I checked our current post code & a bishopton one in a crime checker thing there been like 400+ more violent / theft crimes here & like 4 in Stratford 😂. So agree the rougher areas will probably be lovely by my standards. Ive lived in Solihull and all around Birmingham but just wanna move out and have a fresh start somewhere different but that isn’t too far away from friends / family.

Also I know how bad the traffic gets that’s the only worry but also why I want to be in walking distance of the train station / the town. My husband will still work in Birmingham & I work in Hall Green and will stay there too and either drive or get the train. So yeah deffo wanna be somewhere in walking distance of the town / station (either park way or the main one)

@Aprildaisyx you could pretty much live anywhere in Stratford and be walking distance from town to be honest, it's so small. Don't forget there's a station in town too so you don't need to be the parkway side of town. It sounds like it's really personal preferences and budget that would dictate it for you.

WindblowingSW · 21/11/2020 10:33

It's small. I used to live near Anne Hath Cottage. Leamington seems nice but has some very rough areas.

Lauchlo · 23/07/2021 23:36

Hi, looking to move into the area. Interested, which would you consider the rough areas?

Scutterbug · 23/07/2021 23:38

I live here too. Im south of the river (Tiddington) and been very happy here. Im not overly keen on bishopton but tbh Stratford is pretty decent wherever you live! Schools are good x
