Storm Damage - claiming on insurance

ToDoListAddict · 09/02/2020 16:48

So Storm Ciara decided to rain right through to my conservatory!
I've got home insurance but my providers are not open until tomorrow. I've never had to do something like this before so very unsure on the procedure.

Do I have to call the insurers and they assess the damage and then I look for repair men or...? So completely clueless Blush
The cover reads as if it is all covered but with £300 excess but I don't want to do anything that will void the cover. So literally just got buckets and towels everywhere.
I'm going to call them tomorrow as soon as they're open and get their advice.

I just wondered if anyone has been through this previously and could advise me how it went?

So was there any damage caused ?

Bellyfullofbiscuits · 09/02/2020 16:50

Where is the water coming in from ?

ToDoListAddict · 09/02/2020 17:08

Water is running down the conservatory wall so I'm assuming there's cracks/holes something, somewhere letting the water into the house.
It's dangerous because it's leaking directly onto/into the light fixture.
Would that be enough for a claim or does something need to be seriously damaged first?

Sorry to be clear, the water I'm talking about is the rain.
It starting pouring with rain earlier and then we saw it was coming down the walls.

They will only pay out if your property is in good repair normally

ToDoListAddict · 09/02/2020 17:16

@Happygirl79 It seems to be in good repair to my standards. Not had this issue before, but you never know with insurance providers I guess.

You might want to get some quotes in first and then call your insurance provider. The roofer/builder will be able to tell you if it was the storm that caused it and if it will be above the insurance excess.

If you call and ask about damage that you may claim on they log it and you are deemed as a claim risk even if subsequently you don't claim. And to make it worse it follows you around even when you change providers. Well at least that's what happened to us about 8 years ago. I was not amused.

Notify insurers. How long since the conservatory was built?

ToDoListAddict · 11/02/2020 13:29

Turns out it wasn't as bad as I thought and just needed resealing so no need to claim on insurance. Got to wait and see if the resealing has solved the problem but no doubt there will be more heavy rain very soon!
