Rainwater coming in through boiler flue. How worried should I be?

A few weeks ago a pool of water appeared under our boiler after it rained for 48 hours. Called out an engineer who said it was rainwater and was a design fault of the Worcester boiler.

Haven't had any issues since. Cue Storm Ciara and there's currently a big pool accumulating.

The engineer we had round did that whole "shoulder shrug" thing and took the call out fee saying there isn't anything that can be done, but surely it can't be good that this is happening?

Also we have lived here for several years, it rains a lot here, so it's a bit weird that this has only recently started happening.

I think we need to get a second opinion but DH disagrees (very much a "leave it till it's on its last legs" approach with everything).

It’s happened to me. I think it’s ok, just a nuisance, but you might need to change the cowl outside

Letthemysterybe · 09/02/2020 09:28

I’d be worried

BubblesBuddy · 09/02/2020 09:45

Can you put a cowl on it?

TossACoinToYourWitcher · 09/02/2020 13:41

It's a horizontal one so I am not sure if a cowl will help? Think I will put my foot down and call another engineer tomorrow.

IM a gas engineer and have designed and tested a product to prevent rain ingress through air side of boiler flues which does not affect the performance of the boiler having come across this problem many times even with flues properly installed however I’ve hit a brick wall with regards to all boiler manufacturers will not indorse or entertain the idea, I was close with baxi and they even carried out surveys across the country which were extremely positive but then decided not to proceed probably because they sell more boilers or parts caused by damage due to this problem, also it’s strange how they do not cover this problem under parts and labour warranties.
So here I am with a product that works but can go no further with it because of this
