Moving with a packing service- how does it work?

I've booked removals for Wednesday next week and I've booked the packing service as I haven't been able to take any time of etc etc.

I'm finding it so strange not getting started though - do u really just leave and they pack EVERYTHING? Seems so wrong somehow!

Am thinking will pack essentials, overnight stuff, school uniform etc myself or I might not be able to find it!

I haven't really moved like this before so it's all new 🤪

Honestly, don't stand still for very long or you'll be packed too, OP.

Well I think you might be me Eggys - box file of important documents also went in the car.

Another tip - get together the manuals of anything bring left in the house and make sure they don't get packed. I had a box of things for the new owners.

I'm using the service snd they will also be storing my stuff for a month until I complete in the new house. So I've got to have things in my car that I need for the next month, including my daughter's keyboard as she has an exam! I'm trying to empty the house now of stuff so they don't pack crap that I just have to dispose of at the other end. At the moment it looks like I'm about to have a jumble sale.

Wow, how much extra does it cost to get packers in?

SkintSingleMother · 31/05/2021 19:07

Depends how much stuff you've got. They'll give you a quote. I think I paid about £300 extra but it was worth it. Saved weeks of work and I'd have had to buy boxes anyway - the days of getting spares from the supermarket are long gone. If you've got appliances and furniture you need proper movers so it wasn't much more on top of that for packing. It's definitely worth it. But yes have a few boxes of things you need to hand straightaway that you've put by yourself - extension leads are a good shout. I forgot to put mine to one side and it was a right old hassle.

I have done it both ways.

On the last move we had packing service, but I felt very out of control over what went where and in which box - it did make unpacking difficult as the right box was not necessarily in the right room; and stuff from different destination rooms was mixed in the boxes.

I moved in March and did the packing myself with family help. I had it all sussed - only one room's contents in one box, no mixing. Detailed labelling of all the boxes. The whole process was much easier at the arrival end. I had the boxes unpacked and disposed of within 2 weeks.

Yes, you need to pack an essentials set in advance and put it somewhere very clearly marked of not completely removed from the house (your vehicle is good if you have one). The packers come in like locusts and pack everything. Everything. Don’t have anything in the trash bins, it will be packed.

I've always had this service, one reason being a lot of books which would take me ages but they're able to do very quickly. They've ŵritten on the boxes according to contents and receiving room so unpacking not too bad.

This thread has made me laugh… “packing locusts” “you might be able to slow them down with biscuits but only slightly” 😆😆
