Decorating tips for a newbie

ivegotthisyeah · 06/02/2020 21:26

I have never decorated / painted before but as funds are tight I really want to give it a go and have booked a day off work to do my downstairs loo which is a very small rooms. I just want to paint the walls no glossing or anything!
I'm going navy blue so it's a big change!
Any tips so I don't fuck it up Hmm

Definitely tape off areas where you don’t want paint!

Don’t put the paint on too thick.

Keep your paint at room temp around 24 hours before you start.

If you can, loosen switches and any other fittings to get a better finish.

Normally best to sugar soap down the area you’re painting first.

Put some good music on while you’re painting!

Frog tape is your friend. Get a decent roller set and a good cutting in brush. Get throw away plastic sheeting, it’s easier than using sheets. Ventilate the room. If you can’t remove radiators, get a small roller to get behind. Cut in first.

small room, dark blue - better buy some very powerful lightbulbs!

careful on plastic sheeting which is slippery as.

Cutting in means the first bit of painting, which is around the edges, around the bits you've taped off with Frogtape (the yellow one for delicate surfaces is best).

You can stop the paint from bleeding under the tape either by using decorators caulk at the edge (and taking off the tape quickly before it and the paint dries) or if not using caulk then take off the tape quickly, while the paint is still wet, and wipe off any paint that's not supposed to be there with a clean wet rag or kitchen towel.

You will probably need at least two coats if the new paint is a different colour to the old one (so not, for instance, painting white onto white). Be careful to work out the square footage of your walls and get enough paint - if you have to get another lot later it might be very slightly different and look patchy. If you need two cans, make sure they're the same lot number.

Take off or cover anything you don't want to be splattered with paint!

If the pre-preparation is good, you'll be surprised how easy and satisfying it is.

Make sure you stir the paint well

Thank you everyone - have two led spotlights as like I say a tiny room! I'll let you know how it goes 🙈
