Moving house in 3 weeks, where do I start?!

Think we are moving house at the end of Feb. I have been feeling very blasé about it, but awoke last night in a blind panic. 3 weeks, and one of those is half term! What do I do?! We are fairly decluttered already, but is it too early to start packing eg books & ornamental crap into boxes? Can we moved the drawers filled with their contents or do I need to empty them out?

We’ve actually never done a straightforward house to house family move, moved into storage both of the other times. Feeling like this should be easier...?!

Definitely get packing! Anything youre not going to need in the next few weeks (like spare bedding/old towels/ old music/photo albums anything!) and anything youre not going to need any time soon (in case of sale falling through) get it packed! Cant start this too early in my opinion.

Having done this recently I took on the following advice and it was amazing (and simple and now seems obvious):
Get a notebook and number the pages
Number each box (and note size for easy of ref)
List what is in each box in the notebook under the corresponding number.
Then when packing, on move day, or after when you need to know where something is you can flip through your little notebook rather than clambering about looking for labels on/contents of boxes.

Heavy things in small boxes, lighter things in big boxes.

And yes, start packing now!

And yes you need to empty drawers

I’m oddly jealous Grin

Get a moving company to come and give you a packing and moving quote. Get them to do it and they’ll do all the work for you on moving day.

I've moved house 5 times and have never had to empty the drawers in a chest of drawers!

Lightsabre · 06/02/2020 22:26

Brilliant idea Thinkle and wish I'd thought of that when we moved! Packing services very good but you need to declutter still. Start now as there's so much more stuff than you think!

Get packing. I started at least a month before we moved. Work our what you won’t need and pack it.

Talk to the removal company about what they will transport as is. Ours took side boards and chests of drawers complete with contents. They even took one of those Ikea Kallax units with all the full boxes in. Hanging garments from the wardrobe were also moved straight into mobile wardrobes.

If you don’t want a full packing service, ask about partial services. We paid for a little TV hen pack, and they came the day before and packed all the plates etc much quicker that I would have done. While they were there, they were also happy to pack anything g I wasn’t sure how to protect. Another bed with was that they took all the boxes I had already packed and some of the furniture we didn’t need for our last nights it made it easy to get a head start on cleaning and they were out of the property by 9.30am in moving day.

Get some good packing boxes, tape, bubble wrap from a storage place. Also a big roll of packaging cling film, they are so useful. You can wrap it round awkward bundles and chests of drawers to stop them opening etc.

if you can spare a few hundred extra seriously look into getting your removal company to pack for you. It isn't much extra usually and it takes most the stress out. They arrive the day before, whirl round and pack everything and then come back the next day to move you. It's ace

Oh jeez now you’ve put a rocket up my bum & I want to crack on but my youngest has chicken pox. Argh! Fortunately we only moved here less than a year ago so we shouldn’t have too much crap... DH reckons it took us no time at all to pack up last time (which was 2 years ago - were overseas with our stuff in storage in between) but I think that’s because he was at work & I did loads of it on my own, & I definitely did start earlier Confused I’ve rung a removal company to come give me a quote and will see what it is for packing too...

honestly my packing service was the best money I've ever spent. It allows you to do practically nothing between now and move day

I like to know what is in each box so packed my own.

I used coloured paper (thanks kids) and cut them into large squares, each square was numbered for the box and I stuck a coloured square in the top corner of every side of the box so it could be seen from all angles, and one on top. I also had clear tape in a packing tape dispenser, made sealing boxes easy and putting the labels on easy.

So the dining room contents were in green boxes, kitchen was yellow. I also did exactly what Thinkle did and listed the contents of each box in a notebook that lived in my handbag so I didn't lose it (also where I wrote meter readings)

I listed stuff as to what item it came out of, so dining room would be the sideboard stuff, or lounge X storage unit or cupboard under the stairs. The thought being that if I knew where to find it in the last house, I could find it now.

I did separate kitchen items into used infrequently (orange boxes) so cake tins etc and then items to be unpacked immediately (red boxes) plates, bowls, mugs etc.

When we got keys for the new house, I stuck the coloured paper of each room over the door frame so the removers knew which room to put it in. That way I could be in the kitchen unpacking not having to tell them where to put stuff. Just because something came from Ds2's bedroom at the last house doesn't mean that is where I want it at the new house. I kept his room clear to decorate asap as he was 3 and I knew he would struggle so I decorated his room within 2 days of moving.

It is never to early to pack, although I like a long exchange to completion so we had 3 weeks! I definitely knew we were moving out.

Get quotes from more than one company. We got three, and chose the middle one.
