Wardrobes/ cupboards that go over bed and down the side

We are about to get wardrobes and I need to maximise storage space. What is your experience of having those cupboards that go either side of the bed (would include space to have somewhere to put books/ drink). Then they meet overhead cupboards.

They are so 1970’s. Really awful.

If it was 1999 they would look Good.

Yes, New. I'm trying to come up with a compromise. The traditional units don't work, but if the bridging units are shallower, and come down further toward the bed, then it can. So you'd have full height deep wardrobes on each side, and shallow units behind and above the bed. Even with doors, they look better than the deep high bridge units.

OP, if you're not planning on moving for a while and there isn't another solution then does it matter if others think it's dated? If it's practical and you like the look of it that's all that matters surely?

I am obsessed with storage and put them in our last house against everyone’s advice because everyone argued they are v 80’s. I loved the extra space and would do it again definitely if I needed space. Plus there is a massive 80’s decor revival at the moment so reckon you’ll be bang on trend come next year!

When they are done like this I think they are the opposite of dated anyway...they make me think trendy Scandinavian loft. Not sure why as never stayed anywhere in Scandinavia that looks remotely like these 😝😝

I've been considering this to get best use of the floor in my room. I've come to the conclusion that the bed needs to come away from the wall so it doesn't feel too enclosed. I'm thinking effectively a really thick headboard / shelf thing (say 30cm). which of course gives a shelf above the bed to fix lights on.

Lots of hotels do this. Style is key to ensure it doesn't look like the 1980s. Hotels seem to work because they usually have large rooms, yet most of us want storage in small rooms!

The bed comes forward in our design - then the cupboards are shallow and we lose the floor space behind the bed (about 30 Cm I think) where the panel comes down and the headboard sits

DustyDiamond · 05/02/2020 18:57

I have them

I got white gloss slab doors & oak sides so it's not oppressive - also don't have bedside tables, just open shelves next to the bed

Def recommend getting an ottoman bed as well - LOADS of storage!

Thank you all. Some of these styles are stunning but probs cost an arm and a leg too.
Noeuf where did you get that one from?
Why isn't the bed up against the wall?

Hammonds - it's not online we asked about designs etc. So the bed comes forward, and there's a large back board which is the headboard but with space behind which is the cupboards.
