Using kitchen wall cabinets as base units

Has anyone does this? I want to install two extra cupboards in the kitchen but haven't enough space for base units. Can it be done as a diy project?

I dont see why you couldnt. We built our own kitchen from IKEA and the wall units were exactly the same as the base units, just not as deep.

Inforthelonghaul · 04/02/2020 21:51

We have done this and works really well

Gemma2019 · 04/02/2020 21:53

Yes we’ve done it before - you can just buy legs separately

SwedishEdith · 04/02/2020 21:58

IKEA do base units in two depths.

BubblesBuddy · 04/02/2020 22:45

I would just do open shelves and baskets. I think it would look at bit odd. What about the plinth and work surface?

andanothernewname · 05/02/2020 08:44

Yep I did this years ago. It was a galley kitchen and space was tight so I had full depth base units with wall units above on one side and wall units as base units with nothing above on the other. It worked brilliantly - made everything feel lighter and less cramped.

DIY Kitchens also do shallow base units, lots of places do, so you can still have them up on legs and a plinth in front.

We're doing this in our kitchen with IKEA; run of normal base units then a couple of shallower ones on the end so there's more table room. Worktop will be solid laminate so can run across both without exposed edge being a problem.

Had a normal plinth underneath and worktop was obviously just narrower. Wall and base units are generally the same height so it works fine. You may just need to buy extra legs to go underneath.

We did it as a diy job although my then partner was very handy. (Rubbish at literally everything else, mind you..)

HoHoHolly · 05/02/2020 09:34

Yes very easy.

Or get a full height shallow cupboard if space allows and you don't need the worktop.

We built a whole pantry wall into our kitchen with Billy bookcases, with METHOD doors to the front. Looks great and only 30cm deep, it's perfectly in the gap. We had to cut the bookcase down in height to match the doors.

PigletJohn · 05/02/2020 15:19

yes

if the room is very narrow, consider double half-width doors as they will not be in the way so much.

PigletJohn · 05/02/2020 15:21

btw if for some reason you can't get them, you can cut down ordinary floor units to any size you want by whizzing a saw round the back and sides. Factory made rigid units will be OK; if self assembly, do it before assembling them, as you may need to add extra screws to hold them together.

Muddledupme · 05/02/2020 15:34

We did this and it worked really well and gave us an extra ledge.

ShakespearesSisters · 05/02/2020 15:37

Yep, I did this, the standard wall cupboards are same height as base units, you just need to buy some legs. The plinth fits under then in the same way as it would on a base unit.
Then you just need to cut the work surface so its narrower.

ObamaSelf · 05/02/2020 20:22

Thanks for all of your suggestions.
So how would you get the worktop cut down to a narrower depth? Would somewhere like Ikea do it for you if you bought the worktop from them? Or is there somewhere that sells worktops in non-standard sizes?
I am a bit clueless! DH is quite competent at DIY but has shown zero interest so trying to work it out myself.
Like the billy bookcases idea with doors too, genius!!

I think worktops come in a standard size so you’d need whatever tool it is you need to cut them down. I think fitting worktops is a bit more specialist so might need to get a pro in for that bit?

ImTheCaddy · 05/02/2020 21:12

The worktop works the same as it does on a breakfast bar. It's very simple to do.
