Is it possible to have a statement bathroom on a budget?

Without paint?

All our money has gone on the kitchen and now due to a series of unfortunate events we are forced to strip out and re-build the bathroom.

I live in a small terraced house with a disproportionately large bathroom, so there's a lot of surface to cover. 1.7m x 3m. that's slightly smaller than the smallest bedroom 😬

DP and I don't like partially tiled bathrooms because I think they look unfinished and DP is reminded of our renting days.

So we want a fully tiled bathroom but we don't have huge amount of money to spend, and I want it to look interesting. Our current bathroom is completely tiled in white square ceramic tiles.

Personally I don’t like panels - make me think of inside of a caravan bathroom. I know lots of people do like them though.

Do people just go for a statement bathroom and then other rooms aren’t making a statement? Or are all rooms trying to make a statement? It sounds quite ‘busy’ to me.

Personally I’d prefer simple quality over statement ....but perhaps we’re talking about same thing and calling it different names. Does statement also mean modern?

I guess no-one purposely chooses old and grotty looking - different styles (like Victorian or whatever) but everyone wants new to have the best of current features - but these could be very under stated rather than ‘statement’
Sorry but statement sounds blingy and show offy to me - style without substance if it’s cheap statement - and the kind of thing that will date and look shabby fast.

Luxury features I can understand. Statement, not so much.

How about painted tongue & groove instead of tiles (obviously you might need a few tiles areas). There is one shown in the pictures you linked to.

Personally I am not keen on tiles & avoid where possible. In my bathroom we have used very large matt white tiles where they are needed around the bath & basin. The rest of the walls are painted white so there is not too much of a contrast.

We have a fully tiled large en suite that’s bigger than the ops bathroom. We used Porcelanosa tiles and Duravit loo etc. It has underfloor heating. It’s warm and inviting. It doesn’t echo! It has a big free standing bath and the sink is a big double. It wasn’t done on a budget but it’s still perfect 10 years on. I don’t think anyone here has a big heated bathroom! You have to heat it to avoid it feeling cold.

We have a standard family bathroom with tongue and groove and it has a more country look. Another en suite has a big white tiled shower and double basins. That’s mostly painted walls but s huge mirror wall behind the sinks. That adds glamour! Dark wood floor makes it feel expensive. Another en suite is tiled in travertine and that’s quite Mediterranean in feel.

The key to keeping bathrooms warm and usable is decent heating and towel rails. If the budget is limited just tile around the bath and shower. Or do the tongue and groove if going for the country look but that’s not “statement” in my view. Just nice and practical. Porcelanosa have ace tiles. Their big format ones are wonderful.

We are subway tiling our bathroom at the mo. 2.7m by 1.7m. 2.3m ceilings. £10 per m2 for tiles. £25 per m2 for the tiler. Another £150 for grout, adhesive and trims.

Click vinyl flooring is water resistant and looks good, without being cold like a tile floor.

I definitely wouldn’t rule out a good quality Lino floor, you could always replace it with tiles later, but you can get some great modern ones and they are cheap!

We used burts for Lino in other rooms in our house and have been really pleased with it, if I were budgeting a bathroom, I’d look there.
