Will this garden get any sunlight?

Hello

We're thinking of buying a new build off plan, but I'm just a bit worried the garden won't get any sunlight. It's a NNW facing garden I'd say, north isn't directly up, but it might as well be... The house is a town house so 3 stories, I'm just a bit worried that the garden would be in constant shadow. It's next to a road though, so I wondered if it might get sunlight from the west? The house on the otherside of the road will be 2 stories.

There's at least one website and/or app where you can put a location in and see how the sun and light track round during the course of the day - you can check for different times if the year too. This has come before on this board so if do a search you may find details.

Findmyshadow.com

My house is a similar setup but has a larger garden. Assuming your garden is under 10m long which is pretty typical for a new build you won’t get any winter sun. But should get spring and summer sun minus the shade of your house, which probably depending on height will cast a shadow of 7m in early spring to 2m in peak summer.

Just struggling with the app...

OP, the North isn’t marked on the drawing. Is it at the top? If so, then the garden is West facing and you should get lots of sun in the afternoon.

I've cropped the little arrow to show the direction @JoJoSM2 :) I thought this was North facing? If it's West, that's much better!

@Squirreltamer I think it's just over 10, about 11 or 12? Will confirm with the developers though. It's a bit rubbish that new builds have such small gardens :(

The house blocks the light coming from the East but there’s no building to the West (other than across the road) so I’d call it West facing. Nothing in the way of the sun coming from the south side either so should be a very sunny garden.

You can always drive past and stand by the fence to see what it’s like.

Isn’t the house itself in the way of sun from the south? Especially as a townhouse I think that garden will get very little light?

It took me a while to work the map out for what was house/garden though and still may not have it right!

You won't get any sun. Maybe a bit down the bottom end in the late evening. But not in winter. The inside of the house is going to be very shady too.
Also townhouses are rubbish. They're packed in like sardines and theres no room to expand. Are the room sizes decent?
Also the parking situation looks very tight.

I thought the red rectangle was the garden. Or it the house?

If the red is the house and the garden is N of it, then yes, it will be dark.

MiniCooperLover · 30/01/2020 17:13

Lots of townhouses around here have very boggy gardens because the tall house shades the tiny garden constantly so it can never dry out

CoffeeCoinneseur · 30/01/2020 17:18

A 3 storey townhouse with a north facing garden - Thats going to be a dark garden.

Pipandmum · 30/01/2020 17:21

I take it the red is your house and the garden runs above it so you are correct it is facing NNW. It is hard to tell if the trees at eastern end are actually there or are bushes? If they're are trees that may impact you, and if there are fences between the gardens.
You will get some sun mid day in high summer at the bottom of your garden (furthest from the house), but very little in winter when sun is low. You will also get no sun coming in that side of the house.
