North east facing garden

If everything else about the house ticked the right boxes, would a NE facing garden be a dealbreaker?

It would be for me as we like a lot of sunshine in the house and it wouldn’t get any.

Is there a patch with evening sunshine where you can sit with a glass of wine. One little corner is all you really need.

Flutterby63 · 26/01/2020 14:50

NE will still get some sun through the day. I had a NE garden and the sun moved from the front to the back of the garden throughout the day. You may have to move around the garden to catch the most sun of course. It did mean that the kitchen and back bedroom were quite shaded, but we had lovely afternoon sun at the front of the house where our main rooms were.

Deal breaker. We let a house go that was nicer than the one we ending up buying because of no sun. I have never regretted it.

Mine is. The main living area of the kitchen stays cooler In the summer, we can sit outside in the shade comfortably. The garden is long so plenty of sun if you want it. Not too overlooked so not too many shadows

Assuming you have windows, the light will come in to the front though!

Seriously, we have a North East facing garden (200ft), and in Summer we get very little shade, we are busily planting trees in fact. In winter on sunny days we don't need the heating on as the sun comes fully in to the front windows. Our lounge and master bedrooms are at the front, which of course makes a difference, but we find it perfect.

I suppose for us then, it depends on where the living rooms are as well as the orientation and size of the garden.

I am with flutterby too - it is lovely on an unbearably hot day to have a cool kitchen to retreat to.

Inforthelonghaul · 26/01/2020 15:19

As long as there is sun somewhere in the garden during the day/early evening in summer then it’s absolutely fine. You never have sunshine highlighting fingermarks and won’t have to draw the curtains ever because it’s too hot. Also if you have you g children it means there’s always a shady area to play in.

Sleepthiefsmum18 · 26/01/2020 15:27

We have a north east facing garden. Lovely sun in the morning and sun at the bottom of the garden in the evening. Front room gets sun in the afternoon. It's fine!

It is so hard to tell in winter!

Well, if the garden is long enough, you will get the sun. It’s the back rooms that won’t see the sun much. The rooms at the front will be SW facing so you’ll get fab sun most of the day. It’s just a case of working out if that’s where you’re going to spend your time. I prefer having full height windows/doors overlooking the garden so having sunny rooms overlooking the road wouldn’t be as appealing.

Mintchocchipicecream · 26/01/2020 17:19

The garden is about 70 feet long going by google maps. There are trees at the far end of it, a fence on either side and the tall house.
Kitchen and children’s bedrooms at the back. Lounge, dining room and my bedroom at the front.

Ours is NNE facing. The kitchen (at the back) has bifold glass doors and skylights so it's nice and airy and light. If it was south facing it would be far too hot in the summer.

In actual fact, it's the south south west facing front that is more of an issue - we have to keep the front curtains closed when it's hot and the front garden gets absolutely baked in the summer.

jazzandh · 26/01/2020 17:25

I have a North/ South house, the back garden is south facing.

The back of the house in summer is very hot. The kitchen boils. When my DC were small it was too hot in the back garden for most of the day to let them out in it, and even now, we scurry about in the summer for the shaded areas under the mature trees.

The front of my house gets lovely morning sun and again in the evening. (So would be the same for you in the back).

It depends really whether you worship the sun and want to bake in it, or whether you like a cooler feel and shaded area. If summers are getting warmer - do you want to be cooler in the backside or the house or not.

It will also probably depend on where in the UK you are - I am in the SE - so generally a warmer area. In the NE/Scotland perhaps a S facing garden is more beneficial.

BruceAndNosh · 26/01/2020 20:39

All these people who say you'll never get any sun... Most houses have windows at the front as well as the back!
Our garden faces north and it's lovely.

misspiggy19 · 26/01/2020 20:41

Yes, I wouldn’t consider it

Hotcuppatea · 26/01/2020 20:47

Our last house had an east facing garden. In winter, the garden was like Narnia, but the front of the house was lovely and light.

We now have a south west facing garden and the kitchen is barely habitable in the summer because of the heat.

ExchangedCat · 26/01/2020 21:11

Both our previous and current houses have North facing gardens and I'm very happy about that. There's always shade if you need it in summer but I've never found it to be dark. In both houses the living room is at the front so gets sun all day.
