Importance of a garage?

How important do people feel it is for a property to retain a garage? Would another comparable storage space suffice or do people still like somewhere to store their car? Thanks

Where we live the majority of the houses have garages but are not used for cars. Not many have been converted into living spaces but a few have.

What comparable storage space were you thinking of, because I wouldn't class a shed as being anywhere near as secure as a garage, we've always had brick-built garages with secure doors.

NotMeNoNo · 24/01/2020 16:48

People who actually put their car in a garage are probably so few there are plenty of houses with garages for them but motorbikes and pushbikes are easier to steal.

If we didn't have a garage we would instead need a utility room, large dry garden shed with workbench and power, place to store full family camping rig (possibly a loft with a good built in ladder and flooring and shelving) and pushbike storage. So for a family house several other good spaces.

We use our garage for bikes, kayaks, SUPs and other bits of kit. A brick built garage that’s attached to the house and secure is a must. A wooden shed wouldn’t do it.

misspiggy19 · 24/01/2020 16:56

I wouldn’t even consider a house without a garage

TeapotCollection · 24/01/2020 17:01

Wouldn’t bother us as long as it’s got off toad parking

TeapotCollection · 24/01/2020 17:02

Road obviously OOPS!

torthecatlady · 24/01/2020 17:08

I don't have a garage or a driveway and have to park on the street. I hate it. If I had a garage I would definitely park my car in it, especially over winter.
When we do eventually move, a garage is a must for us as we will look to get an electric car and will need somewhere to charge it.

isseywith4vampirecats · 24/01/2020 17:43

our no 1 priority was a proper brick built garage as we have a motorbike and having had one stolen from outside a house with no garage we wouldnt even consider a house with no garage even a shed would not have been secure enough, its currently full of all sorts of things as we are doing the house up but having got one couldn't survive without the extra storage space it provides

namechangerblob · 24/01/2020 17:53

Really interesting, thanks. House has massive and very easily accessible loft space, sheds and generous utility room. We're looking to live here for the long run but don't want to convert away our garage space if they really are a priority for future buyers.

For us a proper garage is an "essential" on my husbands list. Cars are his thing and we often have a third car which is his fun car and need somewhere to secure it.

stellabelle · 24/01/2020 18:02

I'd never buy a house without a proper garage.

Happygirl79 · 24/01/2020 18:07

I recently bought a detached property with a garage and long drive
I really didn't want a garage as will never use it to garage my car but it has proved useful for garden storage
As long as you have a drive I don't think people will be put off

JoJoSM2 · 24/01/2020 18:37

If you’re going to stay there for a number of years, then I wouldn’t worry about it and just make it suit your needs. Or maybe convert the back of it leaving 3m at the front for secure storage.

Use our garage all the time. In winter it means no scraping (essential when I have an extremely tight turn round on school/nursery/commute). All year round it means no one breaks into our car (sadly an issue round here).

Earslaps · 24/01/2020 19:44

Most of the houses on our street have converted the garages into an extra room downstairs, including ours. Ours is now a playroom with huge cupboards that we keep lots of stuff in! We also have two sheds for all the garden equipment etc.

I do miss having a garage but then we love having a playroom! We do have plenty of off road parking.

Nonnymum · 24/01/2020 19:46

Our garage is just used a a huge storage space. We would be lost without it, but only Becaue I would have no 8dws where to put the stuff we store in it. We never keep the car in it.

Nonnymum · 24/01/2020 19:47

Sorry for terrible typo. I meant without the garage we would have nowhere to store stuff, but we never keep the car in it

DesLynamsMoustache · 24/01/2020 19:50

Ours is about to become a playroom too! It's just full of crap and we have a big garden so we are just going to put a big shed up instead. We would never use it to park in as we have a driveway. I value living space more, but not really bothered about it adding value or not as we live here and plan to for a while so I want it to suit our lifestyle, not a hypothetical buyer in the future.

NeverTwerkNaked · 24/01/2020 19:51

Ours is pretty well used and it would be a pain not to have one.
We store 6x bikes, 6x scooters, random other sports gear, garden stuff etc. And we have a utility section with tumble drier and sink etc.

TulipsfromAmsterdam · 24/01/2020 19:57

We have a garage for DH motorbike but are moving to a house where the garage has been converted. Will have to buy a secure metal storage shed but feel the extra space in the house is more important. Might help with keeping on top of clutter as everything gets shoved in the garage at the minute.
There is always the option of changing it back to a garage if it doesn't work out albeit a luxury one.

TreeClimbingCat · 24/01/2020 20:00

We converted a double garage into a massive playroom but retained the back 6ft deep space across the entire back of the garage for storage. We have floor to ceiling shelving throughout so it houses everything, except garden toys which are stored in a storage box outside and a shed that houses the push bikes.

An extra room banked with storage for all the toys, board games, craft stuff, all coats, shoes, wellies, bags, sewing machine, ironing board etc etc is worth so much more to us than a place to park a car. Our drive will hold 4 cars anyway so we didn't lose any parking.

The playroom (had it for a decade) has allowed for people to stay over, toys to be left out such as train track, scaletrix, marble runs, a place to have a dance to a disco ball, an easy to clean space for painting and playdoh, and now a space for gaming computers and desks for homework.

I think the number of people who park their cars in garages is very few compared to those who have converted them. After all my car does not need its own room. As for de-icing the car, out of 365 days how many do I actually scrape ice on? Compare that to the daily use of the playroom.

TheBitterBoy · 24/01/2020 20:00

Our garage was built in the early 60s and is too small for most modern cars, but we wanted a garage for storing bikes, camping gear etc. When we lived in a maisonette we had a decent loft but it was a total pain hauling the camping stuff out of the loft. A garage was on our must have list.

PlumsGalore · 24/01/2020 20:26

Without a garage where would you put sports gear, golf clubs, skis, wet suits, wake board. What about my beef fridge, chest freezer, DDs house stuff from her rental until she can buy. My lawn mower, hedge cutters, suitcases, Christmas decorations, garden tools, sweeping brush, cat carrying baskets.

Not forgetting the Christmas Peter Kay overflow dining chairs and summer garden furniture and umbrella.

Nope, a garage is an essential. I doubt I would ever have storage that could house all the above other than a garage.

PlumsGalore · 24/01/2020 20:27

Beer fridge, I do t eat beef,
