Found asbestos in our bathroom

We are having some work done in our bathroom, this morning our builder calls and tells us that they found asbestos in the bathroom cabinets, which they have now removed.

I guess it's too late for us to do anything now, but I'm panicking a bit! I'm 34 weeks pregnant with a toddler as well. Do we need to move out for a bit? No idea

no. And you are no more susceptible pregnant, as an adult or a child. Everyone is the same.

asbestos only presents a risk when broken up and inhaled. But you do need to check that your builder disposed of it properly under licence.

Asbesto is nasty stuff if broken and the breathed in medium to large quantities. Granted I wouldn’t want to breath in any knowingly!

But if your house was built between 1910-1990 it will be in there somewhere if not disturbed it’s fine.

Did you know breathing in stone dust is pretty much as bad as asbestos... yes Asbesto can give you cancer many decades down the line. But the main issue is the rock dust getting into your lungs which your body can’t get rid of and you generate scar tissue trying to heal it.

Bet you wouldn’t think twice about walking past a neighbour cutting up bricks on their drive with a circular saw? May cover your nose and get on with your day?

Silicosis the disease of breathing in stone dust which is now considered worse than asbestosis as people are exposed to in rather greater quantities and time frames.

But all this said your builder should of followed their risk assessments and dispose of it correctly. At the end of the day they wouldn’t of wanted to break it up. If you find the cabinets mixed with the other waste you know your builder is not professional for sure.

If they have removed in one piece you’ll be fine. My grandparents had an asbestos ironing board... they lived to 85 and 89.... with no ill health

It sounds like the asbestos was in cupboards that have been removed, so is there any reason to suppose that there may be any more?
