What would landlords do?

Tenant stored items in garage and now some things will have to be skipped as they are covered in mould.
Landlord knew tenant planned to store items in garage.
They have been there for a few weeks and have noticed mould today.
Is this just tough as garages are for cars not storing items?
Thoughts please...thanks

yes, it is tough. The house should not have mould (although that can be another can of worms depending on whether it is structural issues or lack of heat/ventilation) but an unheated garage in a UK winter is obviously going to be damp. It will only be suitable for storage of items that can be kept outside.

landlord presumably expected tenant as an adult to know this.

does the tenant not have contents insurance?

The tenant is claiming they stored stuff in previous garage for 3.5 years and never had this problem. I store stuff in mine and it isn't mouldy so wanted to check if tough or not.

Agree, things stored in an I heated garage can get mouldy, not landlord’s fault

Okay, great. Thanks

I wouldn’t expect anything to be mould free after winter storage in a garage. Tenants own risk.

To be honest, as a PP has said, the majority of indoor mould issues are caused by the tenant's lifestyle issues (drying laundry indoors, not opening windows, double glazing meaning no wet air escapes) and if it's not a structural problem, the tenant is usually liable for mould issues.

It's fairly crazy to assume the landlord would take any responsibility for items stored outdoors.
