Electric heater recommendations - stopgap until I can get boiler replaced

My boiler stopped working and looks like it needs to be replaced. It's an old boiler and only affects the heating, so I still have hot water using an immersion heater. It's going to take me a few weeks to work out what to do (get combi? get rid of tank? will impact shower, can I afford to replace etc.) and get my finances in order.

Wondering if anyone can recommend a good plugin heater - electric, oil filled etc. that would do a reasonable job of heating an approx 15 x 25 feet living room.

I live alone, am out all day at work. often out and about in the evenings, and pretty tolerant of the cold, so I can make do for a few weeks (maybe even months), but I have 2 of my oldest, best friends coming to stay next weekend for a long-awaited reunion and to celebrate my cosy new flat. Looking like it won't be very cosy while they are here Sad

our boiler went on the fritz and my other half went to argos and bought a delonghi mini table top sized electric fan heater cost about £40 its brilliant the room got lovely and warm in about ten minutes I don't know running costs was just happy to be warm

I prefer oil filled radiators as I find the fan heaters dry the air out more.

I've got eco oil-free radiators here. They are lighter than oil radiators, more economical, and heat up more quickly than the oil ones.

We had extensive building work and got a Clarke radiant heater from machine mart.i think it was expensive about 70 quid but it's instant heat and it heats you rather than the air so it doesn't even matter if there's a hole in the roof.

Thanks for the recommendations. There's more variety out there than I was aware of.

this lady uses, I think, a "Glen" which is quite a cheap make you will find in places like Argos and Screwfix. hers has a timer as well as a thermostat. I've had that type and the timer whines a bit as it ages, and is the least durable part. Perhaps she needs to save money, I know she is over pensionable age and her son (also shown) is a bit of a financial drain. Look closely. Do you know her? She has a car like mine.

Personally I prefer an oil-filled. They give a more even heat and are safer.

grandson, sorry.

There are great-grandchildren as well, she has quite a large family to worry about. Probably why she has to buy a cheap heater.

justaftb · 23/01/2020 09:25

Well, I believe she has quite a big house, so maybe she was able to get a bulk buy deal on that particular brand? One for each room?

Get an oil-filled radiater.

minipie · 23/01/2020 10:26

Oil filled rad. Those hot air ones always smell of burning dust if not used regularly.

If you’re on a community site/app like Nextdoor maybe ask to borrow? I’d happily lend you ours, we have one for a few specific occasions but in the meantime it’s just taking up space.

@minipie - that's very kind!

I think I am sorted now. Have ordered an oil-filled rad and hopefully it will see me through until I work out the logistics of new boiler installation and possible shower upgrade.

If you are gettng a new boiler, depending on your house i might be worth looking into an air-source heat pump. Although it's more expensive upfront there is a subsidy which covers the cost over the next 7 years. We switched 2 years ago and haven't regretted it. However we were on oil not gas.

15x25ft will be more comfortable with one near each end of the room.
