Underfloor heating ?

Doing a kitchen extension and I need to decide on the heating. Has anyone any strong views on underfloor heating?

I’ve only experienced it myself once, in a bathroom, and it was lovely under bare feet on a wintry morning. But we’re a shoes-on household and I’m wondering if it would be an unnecessary expense.

do you mean electric? Or wet from a gas boiler?

Wet UFH is not a practical proposition unless it is included while the floor is being laid.

Electric UFH is not a practical proposition unless you can afford to burn £5 notes.

I have no idea whatsoever what I mean!

If you're digging out and pouring a new concrete floor, you can put insulation under the concrete, and cast water pipes into it, for connection to your boiler for wet heating. You can also have pipes under the floorboards of a wooden floor, which is less common in a new build or extension.

You'll need a heating engineer and a builder who is familiar with the method. The water is blended to be warm, but not as hot as in radiators, so it needs extra controls. Any leaks, faults or mistakes will be impossible or vastly expensive to rectify once it is encased in concrete.

Your cat will like it.

Energy from electricity costs about four times as much as energy from gas, so many people who have it don't use it. It is sometimes used in bathrooms that are relatively small.

I've found I don't need heating in the kitchen. My radiator is permanently off

Aga?

I have under floor heating and I really don't like i. I feel that it takes longer to heat the house. I wouldn't do it again given the choice.

Thanks @PigletJohn that’s very very helpful. Appreciate everyone’s views too.

I think it’s going to be a no from me then.

How about having some of those plinth heaters put in?

I had underfloor heating at my previous house. I thought I'd love it but absolutely hated it, I'm so happy to have my radiators back now. It would actually put me off buying a house with it now as I could never get the house to a nice even temperature, it cracked a few tiles and I missed simple things like where to stick a wet towel etc 🤷🏻‍♀️
We have hive heating now and it's the best ever and so simple to use 🙌🏼👏🏼
