Moving - Brighton or Hove?

Hello!
We’ve made the decision to move away from London! And - rather cliche - we’re moving to Brighton or Hove as it’s still easy for me and DH to get into London for work when needed and it’ll overall be better for DD than Brixton, especially when school starts, we think.
We have some house viewings set up this week. I had initially thought Brighton but most the houses we are viewing are actually in Hove....
So....battle it out. What are your views? Living in Brighton or Hove - what’s better?
Fiiiiiiight!**

How exciting, OP! I stayed in HOve fora long time this last summer and loved it! (not Central Hove but towards Aldrington) but it's all close by compared to London. It's just so chill and looks good. And great many cafes/restaurants/pubs not too expensive.

Just looked up the street - perfect! Went past that on the bus from my place a bit further out. You are near The Giggling Squid too Grin

I must check out this Giggling Squid! Not heard of it yet! Thanks for the recommendation :)

Funnily enough, it’s near a restaurant called The Ginger Pig, which is apparently great. When me and DH first moved in together 9 years ago pre DD - we lived above a restaurant called The Ginger Pig in Hoxton. So I guess that’s sort of fate? Haha.

It's a sign, yes Grin
The Squid has branches - I've come across it in Bristol initially!

The ginger pig also has various other pubs in the area.

It's a lovely street and you'll be close to West Hove Connaught infants school there. If you get your act together you would also be in line for St Andrews CofE school.

Osbourne Villas is lovely! Have you spoken to work about flexible working yet?

You moved hundreds of miles away and you’re still not happy?? Mmm probably nothing to do with Brighton/Hove then, there are drugs everywhere, including villages in ‘the middle of nowhere’.
B&H has problems for sure, it it’s also a very warm friendly inclusive city, I’ve lived in very affluent areas, let’s just say they weren’t very tolerant of those less fortunate than ourselves unfortunately, whereas at least we try to have a social conscience here......

Great decision btw! We are so glad we moved here.

How can you be glad you moved there and then in the next breath, say the playground is littered with drug paraphernalia and condoms? Confused

Whenever anyone mentions Brighton i'm always reminded of this story from a few years back:

metro.co.uk/2018/11/27/its-ridiculous-piers-morgan-and-munroe-bergdorf-clash-in-heated-live-interview-about-gender-fluidity-8181278/

Makes me think Brighton is some sort of liberal dystopian collapsing star & not really the place you'd want to raise children.

There is a big problem with drugs and homelessness in Brighton at the moment, the main playground in central Brighton (the level) Is often littered with beer cans, needles, condoms and worse - just horrible if it was your local playground.

I visited Brighton at the start of this year and was shocked by the amount of open drug use in the parks and people who were clearly off their faces on various substances. It wasn’t like this a couple of years ago - what happened?

Lots of people come here as its London by the sea, looking for work, end up homeless as the rents are almost as much. That's why I moved out to Shoreham 5miles along the coast when my eldest was 8months. Much nicer and free of open drug taking/begging.

I can't imagine why anyone would choose to bring their kids to raise in Brighton these days.

The sheer openness of it in broad daylight did shock me I have to say (and I’ve seen it all!)

Definitely hove. I lived in both but much preferred hove. For the last year there I lived behind (as in not the sea side) of hove station and it was lovely and quiet. Prior to that on hove seafront.

Brighton was always dirtier, noisier, more crowded etc. I'm going back some years though.

We moved to Hove in Feb (Osborne Villas) and love it. Friendly neighbours, nice community atmosphere.
Glad we didn’t go for Brighton. Lovely for a cheeky night out but definitely not for us! Haha. I can’t believe how different they are.

Hello, we are also looking to move to B&H. We are focusing our search on the town end of Preston Park (Rugby Rd environs) and around Hove/Aldrington station. We are struggling to find anything suitable ATM as we want a bigger property than our current 4-bed terrace in SW London (150m2). There is a property, in the south of Hove Park so 15 mins from Hove station/Preston Park station, which meets the size aim but I am really worried that I will feel we should have gone for something in Poets Corner or town end of Preston Park due to being near cafes, and obviously the sea in Hove and more period feel). Any thoughts on this? Is Hove Park near enough to still enjoy the buzz or will it feel a bit "too residential" despite the benefits of a larger property and garden. Until now I have always gone for location over size but in reality, with children, may be size should be top priority. Preston Park seems to be the safest option for schools but we are 8 years away from secondary and a lot can happen with schools in that time.
