Hello,
We are looking to do a small side extension to our kitchen which would mean the kitchen would become 12ft5 in length and 13ft4 wide. We would have it open plan to the dining room at one end, then french doors to patio and a door to the utility at the other end.
My question is can I have an island in that space? Anyone got a kitchen similar. Have considered 300ml cupboards on the new extension wall, then island with sink and cooker ect along current kitchen wall, just don't know if it will work/look right.

I can’t quite imagine the dimensions. It would be helpful to have a plan to scale but it’s easy to work out.

Standard cabinets are 60cm deep and you need at least 100cm (ideally 120cm) space between your cabinets and the island. If it’s a double sided island, it’ll be 90 or 120cm deep.

Then you need space for a table and chairs and room to walk around. If the space is a little tight, consider a banquette.

Yes you could fit an island, but not cupboards either side

You’d probably be better of with an L run and an island. Cabs either side of an island make it feel quite closed. Also 300mm cabinets will cost the same (if not more, as they will be standard 600mm carcasses someone has to cut down) and be almost useless. Plus they’ll look odd. Download a room planner app and stick some stuff in and see how you feel it looks best.

Hard to picture without aof the room, but in a 13ft4 (4064mm) wide space, you could have full size (600mm) cabinets either side with a 900mm wide island and have about 1000mm walking space either side.

Absolute minimum walking space I try and leave is 800mm to allow comfortable access to a standard (660mm) wheelchair .. I'm from the north of england and most houses here are rather restrictive on space.

Visually, it'd be a wide galley kitchen with a island running centre.

You could use slimline cabinets on one side (assuming that you have no appliances in that run) to either make the space feel more open or increase the size of the island, but keep budget in mind.

If you're thinking of going with laminate worktops to keep the cost down, most suppliers limit them to 900mm wide; any wider and you'll be looking at compact laminate or a premium worksurface like quartz.

I don’t think it’s big enough for an island and with a door open to the garden and utility room it’s even smaller due to circulation space. I might be more inclined to have a peninsular and have dining near the doors to the garden. I would make the dining area into the kitchen. That way you make better use of space.

Hello all,

Thank you for the suggestions and information. The whole house would be open plan, we have incredible views to the front of the property so need to maximize that, which other houses do, so wouldn't put the kitchen in the dining room. The back of the house is only a courtyard. We are also in the north of England so it isn't a big house. I think a run of units and an island might be the way forward. I would like stools on one side so probably couldn't have cupboards along the extension wall.
Think I need to go to a kitchen place

This was one of the plans for mine. It’s 4m wide, so similar
That run of units is about 6m, so longer
Might give you an idea

Thank you for the plan, looks great. Who did the plan @amaryl?

It was a local kitchen co, would definitely recommend if you’re in the NW

Howden’s will do a plan but I also asked a small firm who make bespoke kitchens. We went with the bespoke firm who came up with a couple of alternatives. They redrew the plans without a problem couldn’t have been better. They organised all the trades as we had to change the electrics too. Lads that came were great and insisted on sweeping up every night. We now have a kitchen which we love. How far north are you?

Hello, we are in York. Will look up Howdens, plus I saw wren have free consultations.
