Smelly new house

I’ve just bought a property in need of full decoration which I had planned to do over the next couple of years.

The vendors had several large dogs so I was prepared for the property to smell a bit but the dog smell is overpowering. I got a migraine the first day as it was so strong (strong smells are a trigger for me).

I’ve had the carpets professionally cleaned but it’s only marginally improved the situation. Full and quick decoration is not an option because it’s a large house (300 square metres) so I couldn’t do it myself but paying someone will eat into my tight budget fir the work I have planned.

Has anyone got any ideas on how I can improve the smell please?

Carpets need to go. Any soft furnishings left by previous owners need to go. And then woodwork, including skirting boards, doors, kitchen units need cleaning/disinfecting. I would also give the walls a wipe. And if you can bear the cold - open windows.

I bought off a dog owner. Only carpet removal got rid of the smell of doggo.

We put laminate on our stairs and landing, the underlay smelt more than the carpet did.

Carpets are indeed minging.

Pee soaked into floor under carpets and floor covering .
Throwing carpet under lays out scrubbing wooden floors with sugar soap .
concrete floors it soaks into concrete product call p1ss 0 ff works well on concrete and solid floors .

When you peel back the carpets you can see the stains

Also if you have laminated flooring it seeps in around the joints and smell lingers . remove all soft finishing etc

I used to dread coming home
To my new house when we moved in because of the vile smell of dogs left by Previous owners. Truly the only thing that helped was getting the carpets up and the blinds off but we decorated with the carpets down first so it was still 4 months or so before I managed to get rid of them all. Vile. I don't know how people live in the smell.

I would sugar soap all walls and woodwork, and let air as much as is possible. I would rip the carpets up, if this isn’t an option make sure they are fully drying as sometimes damp underlay can smell like dog!
