Are for sale boards needed?

I am thinking of selling my home. I live in a Greater London Borough and the board is an extra £60. I’m thinking with rightmove are for sale boards needed? Surely everyone looks on rightmove if they are serious about moving Rather than see a board go up and that Makes them want to move?

The house next door to me sold without a sign so it does work. I guess you just don't get people noticing the house as they walk past.

I would much rather have not had a board! It blew down in the wind and I have bothered telling the agent or putting it back up!

I think they are useful but maybe not so much now. However I've never been charged for having one.

SuperficialSuzie · 16/01/2020 22:10

I think it maybe helps people to find the house if they want to drive past before booking a viewing. Saves them turning up when you have spent hours tidying up and then saying 'oh I don't like that side of the road / lamppost in front of the house / how close it is to the next door house'

SuperficialSuzie · 16/01/2020 22:10

Bit of a cheek of them to charge you for it though

It’s just free advertising for the agent now so don’t have of you don’t want to. I don’t think it really harms

A while ago now, but I sold a flat purely because someone saw the board when driving by, stopped, came and knocked on the door, viewed there and then and made an offer. Job done.

wowfudge · 16/01/2020 23:23

I've viewed houses after driving past and seeing the boards. When I was looking in an unfamiliar area, I took to driving round to pick the nicer looking and feeling houses and streets as I'd been disappointed by some viewings. Would have been impossible without the sale boards.

We sold our last house because someone living nearby took their dog for a walk and saw our board had gone up. They had been looking for a house in the street for a while. It's probably different where you are than in a sleepy village. They have a cheek charging extra for the board, mind. Does the agent's name begin with F?

Puffthemagicdragongoestobed · 17/01/2020 00:14

We got 4 offers within 6 days of going on the market, and this was without a For Sale sign. This was in zone 3 in London last September.

Comefromaway · 17/01/2020 00:20

We are moving house because dh saw a for sale board.

We also spent a lot of time driving round the areas we were interested in Looking for sale boards

willothewispa · 17/01/2020 00:27

No, not at all. We live on a lane with just two houses, they didn't bother to put up a sign for our 'neighbours'. Maybe it's more use in the cities though.

mumsy27 · 17/01/2020 03:21

online agents may charge for sale board.
do it yourself, cost about £15 one side, both side £25 including delivery.
anything helps selling your property is worth considering.

loulouscandi · 17/01/2020 23:34

We sold ours recently quickly without one, more because we didn’t have a front garden so it would have been drilled into house. I think now most people find houses online

zelbazinnamon · 18/01/2020 12:23

We bought our last (urban) house because we saw the for sale board - it was out of our price range of Rightmove searches, but they accepted our lower offer... We now live in a rural area and I've noticed lots of houses locally don't have for sale boards - maybe because there's less passing traffic to actually see the board?
