How much does a new bathroom cost?

Looking to replace our 3 piece bathroom suite and redecorate the bathroom in our flat. This will involve retiling around the bath and repainting the bathroom and then replacement of bath, toilet, sink and replacing with standard white replacements. Floor may also need to be done. The bathroom is fairly small measurements 3.1m x 1.6m. We are in London.

We are budgeting for around £4,000 but is that a good rough price? We have never had any substantial work done before.

Also how soon should we get quotes, we want to get the work done in June.

Grateful for any advice!

I don’t think that’s unreasonable - does it include supply of the sanitaryware or is that on top? I think £3-5k is reasonable for a bathroom, but some high end bathrooms can be closer to £10k depending on what is going in them

Sorry - I thought you already had a quote. I would start getting the quotes in now to be honest, some people have a few months’ wait for space. And a good person will almost certainly have a few weeks.

You could get a bargain on the suite itself if you shop around, likewise with tiles and flooring but it w the fitting that potentially costs the most. You need to ask round friends for recommendations of plumbers and then get some quotes in.
Some stores sell suites ex display off cheap and there are always sales/deals to be had.
I'd get your quotes now, any good plumber will have a waiting list anyway so always best to get yourself booked in.

Ours was smaller than that and £8k in all, mid range things - ours had bath, shower screen, shower over bath, vanity unit with sink, toilet, heated towel rails, new light, new tiling, rubbish cleared, fitted, walls painted and some wooden panels fitted along one wall for that, plumbing and electrics. Would get quotes now. We didn't go for cheapest stuff but not the very expensive either - also included taking old tiles, flooring, bathroom suite out. It was more than I was expecting but we had 2 quotes and looks nice.

Ours is a similar size and was just on £9k, but that included moving the position of the loo and also replacing a window.

We chose mid-range sanitary-ware but it's the seemingly small things that added up (such as grout). I did choose quite expensive taps though.

The labour was less than half the total cost.

Oh and I agree - get the quotes now. We had to wait ages for the plumber to be available.

I don't think you can just say "I want it done in June", especially in London.

Try to find someone who comes recommended by someone you trust and who you feel comfortable with. And hope that they can fit you in at some point this side of Christmas.

Ask me how I know... Sigh.

Thanks all for your replies - very helpful. Think we will get some quotes soon to see what kind of price we are looking at.

We had ours done recently and it came in at about £4500. We had a few higher quotes too. We had an ex showroom suite though which was in perfect condition and has no flaws so that made it much cheeper than it would have been otherwise.

4k sounds like a good price for a budget bathroom in London.

MsMarvel · 13/01/2020 07:19

Just had ours done and it ws 6k. But that included moving a stud wall, creating a cupboard around the boiler and having a seperate bath and shower. Also included walls floor, ceiling and new spotlight lighting.

misspiggy19 · 13/01/2020 09:03

4K will probably get you a budget bathroom

Appletreehouse · 13/01/2020 09:12

In the North so bit lower labour costs, but we've done to bathrooms, first was a budget job, only essential tiling, cheap suite, lino and all in was about £2.2K (involved moving plumbing around etc.) Just had our bathroom done in new house last year, cost around £2k for fixtures and fittings, tiling was £1K for full room (similar size to you) and about £1K for labour (part of bigger building work).

Get quotes now

I'm in the Midlands - been quoted £4k for removing old bathroom and labour for putting in new stuff - plus vanity unit, toilet, bath, towel rail, tiles and flooring it will be around £6500 in total. En suite was £5k labour, shower tray and shower and furniture, tile sheets and flooring plus a couple of other parts were another £2500 ish.
