Price for two built-in wardrobes in alcoves

We are looking to have some built-in wardrobes built in our main bedroom in the alcoves either side of a fireplace and we want them to look the same as in the attached photos (so a quite simple shaker style).

Just wondering if anyone has had anything similar built?

We have been quoted £1550 by an independent carpenter to include MDF supplies, all other materials, installation and painting. This would also include six drawers as in the photo.

I don't know if this sounds reasonable? It does seem like quite a bit of work, especially as the drawers need to be made too.

Is it worth us getting a quote from Sharps or someone or would they be no cheaper?

I have just had a quote for one alcove, although larger, for bookshelves and low cupboards - and it was £2,550.

It's worth getting other quotes but I think that's reasonable.

abitoflight · 09/01/2020 20:33

I think it's reasonable too as long as you know someone who has had work done by him and good quality and finish? Or seen pics of jobs he's done locally?

Olsihabi · 09/01/2020 20:38

We've seen some photos of his other work but don't know anyone he's done work for. He did have very good reviews on mybuilder.com though.

I used a local carpenter to build a large shoe cupboard and it was £700 but all handmade mainly msg in shelves but wood doors so would suggest trying a local chippy

MDF shelves*

So we just had Sharps come round to do a quote... £3700!!!

And that was in the half price sale Shock

I understand the product might be of a superior quality, is finished properly rather than needing to be painted, comes with a 12 year guarantee etc, so I guess we just need to weigh up if we go with someone cheaper whether we'd settle for the odd thing that isn't so perfect in the interest of saving a couple of grand Hmm

It all sounds quite pricey for what is essentially a few bits of wood nailed to the wall. Even taking into consideration craftsmanship etc. If i were you, i'd keep looking.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 15/01/2020 21:02

It sounds quite reasonable to me. I really like your design but will you have some hanging rail for longer items?

Olsihabi · 15/01/2020 21:05

@TinklyLittleLaugh yes the hanging space would be a bit longer as we won't have the shelf bit below - I'm not that tall so don't have many long dresses so am not bothered about having taller hanging space.

How long do you intend to stay in the house. If it's less than ten years I'd be inclined to go for the carpenter option.

Sharps quoted me something ridiculous years ago. I would go with the local joiner, his price is really reasonable.
