We are currently in the process of buying a house which needs a lot of work. I’m pretty sure the kitchen is from the 70’s!

I’ve attached the floor plan of downstairs and think the long term plan would be to have an extension out the back for a big kitchen/dinner, the current kitchen would get split in half with the front half being a downstairs bathroom and the back half being a utility room but the problem is we can’t afford the extension for a good few years.

We want open plan living so are tempted to knock the wall down between the kitchen and dining room until we can afford the extension.

The problem is, this is ultimately a waste of money as it doesn’t fit with the long term plan.

So I thought I’d get your opinions on how you would tackle this situation.

Can't tell from the picture how big a space it is, but as a temp solution I'd make your bathroom and utility and move the kitchen minus the utility items/none everyday essentials to the other side of the wall.

I agree. Bathroom as you come in the door, change back of kitchen to a utility with a door through to the main room where you put in an inexpensive kitchen.
Or, keep the kitchen where it is but punch a door through to the main room so you have better flow while waiting for the extension. Get an inexpensive kitchen in the same layout as it is now. To compensate for the loss of cupboard space where the door is you could get a nice sideboard in the dining area to hold dishes and glassware.

Oooh I never thought about moving the kitchen into the dining room for now. Something to consider. Thank you!

Don't do anything yet. Live in it a bit first. Get to know your house better before you spend any money.

Depending on how handy you are it could be very cheap to move it too, just use what you already have till you're ready to extend and get a new kitchen.
