52 DIY jobs in 2020

milliefiori · 04/01/2020 17:25

My NYR is to average one DIY job per week this year to transform my house from a scruffy place that looks like a student rental into the kind of home people make nice noises about when they walk through the door.

Anyone want to join me in this challenge?

  1. caulked attic bathroom
  2. fitted new shower surround in 1st floor bathroom

This is a great idea! I definitely can't think of 52 off the top of my head but to start with

  1. Assemble new bookcase
  2. Sand/paint internal doors (maybe I can count each door as a separate job)
  3. Paint banister
milliefiori · 04/01/2020 18:03

Definitely count each door as a separate job. Feels better to be able to tick them each off.

I'm in! This is what I need to do, off the top of my head!

  1. Replace sealant in the shower
  2. Replace sealant around some windows
  3. Fit shelves in shed
  4. 'fix' damp/leaked corner of sitting room
  5. deal with damp looking corner of kitchen
  6. Paint outside wooden door
  7. Paint front gate
  8. Clean front patio

So far, no. 1 is done Smile

This would have been a great thread for me 6 months ago, but we've agreed to down tools for the next 4 months (work work pressures). About which I feel both Yay! and Boo!
I am therefore studiously ignoring my mental list.
Best of luck to you all!
(Might surreptitiously polyfilla something tomorrow.)

milliefiori · 04/01/2020 22:11

@BustPipes - hah - the urge to fill grows doesn't it? I'd have caulked DH to the bathroom floor if he'd walked in. So satisfying! Grin

@MaggieFS - that's a good list!

@HotChoc10 - you've reminded me I promised DS1 I'd buy him a new small bookcase. I feel a trip to IKEA coming on...

Next jobs:
caulk bath in first floor bathroom
get rid of bad limescale and black mould in there
regrout
repaint bathroom ceiling
fit new blinds

Bloody black mould in the bane of my life! I think I clean and keep on top of things, yet still it starts appearing.

May I join?

We were planning on not doing anything house related this year as we did a couple of big jobs last year and now we really can’t afford to do much at all. However, I couldn't resist trying to vinyl wrap the utility and kitchen doors for now in the hopes that by the time the vinyl starts to fail we will have saved enough to eventually replace. Inspiration came from a you tube video that I had watched on Christmas eve. I tested my skills in the utility and I was very pleased with how it all looks. I could even say I enjoyed it which has now led me down a rabbit hole of jobs to finish my 'little DIY' project.

Below is my very comprehensive list.

1 - Vinyl wrap utility doors - DONE

2 - Vinyl wrap the fiddly utility trims - DONE

3 - Vinyl wrap the utility work top - DONE but it was harder than the doors and it required tonnes of patience. Put me off doing it in the kitchen so I will take a small break to recover from this. I’m waiting for the flooring samples to arrive to complete the project in the utility

4 - Peel and stick light grey floor planks to utility floor - This is actually what I really wanted to do as currently there are black shiny floor tiles that only stay clean for a short time and show every crumb. I was sick of them. The place never looks clean for long.

5 - If we like the whole thing in the utility, I will then do the same in the kitchen. A lot of cleaning is required here first as it is a lot more greasier (the sticky type) on some surfaces before I can apply the vinyl. Not looking forward to this.

6 - Get rid of all the junk that we have collected dumped on top of the extractor hood.

7 - Clear the junk has collected on top of the utility cupboards.

8 - Complete a toy cull of DD collection. she has way too many and has now even taken to throwing wooden blocks at the windows. We are currently right in the middle of the terrible twos.

9 – Replace hallway runner

10 – Hang the black mirror over the sofa in the living room

11 – Paint the kitchen

12 – Paint the utility walls as they now look stained having changed the doors and worktop colours.

13 – Clean all the windows. Inside and out.

14 – Clean the moss off the conservatory roof.

15 – Repair the broken garden table or if beyond repair take to the tip.

16 – Get rid of the leftover wood that was left besides the shed after we had a tree cut down. I asked the tree surgeons to leave them as I hoped that we would install a wood burner in the future so we would have a read-made stock of seasoned wood but DH is having none of it! So now we are stuck with a massive pile wood that is now surrounded by grass, ivy and looking very untidy in the garden. However, I can imagine that the pile has become a great haven for wildlife.

17 – Declutter utility cupboards

18 – Declutter my wardrobe

19 – Declutter the sideboard cupboards.

20 – Frame and hang the lovely photos of PIL with DD taken at Christmas

21 – With DFIL’ help, rebuild the patio steps in the warmer months as the brick risers weren’t moisture resistant so are now completely spalled.

There's a checklist floating around somewhere of DIY jobs that should be done over the year to maintain any house properly which might help with your lists. It'll be on my watched threads list somewhere. I'll see if I can find it.

isseywith4vampirecats · 07/01/2020 20:07

hasten to add apart from the door handles and papering professionals have done the main jobs most done over the last month due to OH retiring and being able to be in the house for workmen

donkeyoatey · 07/01/2020 20:11

Me too pleaseSmile.

  1. Sand down and treat front door
  2. Paint skirting in front lobby
  3. Finish painting DS bedroom
  4. Paint bathroom
  5. Put up mirror in bath room
  6. Fix hooks to under the stairs cupboard
Good luck all.
CactusAndCacti · 07/01/2020 21:03

We need to do lots, as we moved in about 18 months ago. Some things are massive jobs, so long term and some we do need to get a trade in, but needs to be done:

  1. UPVC door handles replaced x 6 (already done garage)
  2. UPVC door seal to be replaced.
  3. Fence erected last year needs painting.
  4. Paint metal gate.
  5. New shed
  6. New downstairs internal doors (getting someone in)

We replaced the air brick cover on NYE's - but I'll claim it for this year.
