Does anyone have a keyless front door system.

Teenage dd has lost her front door key again so we're having to replace the entire lock because someone in our village has our door key.

So I thought maybe we could go keyless. But am concerned about security. We've had one of those key safes before and they're really easy to work the combination out so want something better than that. Which our home insurance will be OK with.

I have a key safe concealed in an outbuilding. It's adequate for infrequent "locked out" problems.

VivaLeBeaver · 02/01/2020 10:13

I just don't trust her to have a key anymore so was hoping to find a reliable and secure key less lock. Am put off by amazon reviews of people being locked out though.

We have a Yale connexis www.toolstation.com/yale-conexis-l1-smart-lock/p79660?utm_source=googleshopping&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=googleshoppingfeed&gclid=Cj0KCQiAxrbwBRCoARIsABEc9sirvCRGdmFez3I15XmLchShVOGZ7c_M60s4hL5iyYJCOU1_MjvWbToaAmz3EALw_wcB

It can be opened by a smart phone with the app, or a key fob, and I think another kind of fob/token thing too. I think you can also give one time access, for cleaners or whatever. It works pretty well, it's battery operated so need to make sure you out good quality ones in and keep an eye that it doesn't go flat. Ours won't lock if it's flat. We also have a back door with normal key and spare key elsewhere just in case.

A 4 digit code using the digits from 0-9 gives 10000 combinations. How you think that's easy to work out I don't know!

Xiaoxiong · 02/01/2020 10:24

We have a keypad on our outside door, and a combination lock on our inside door. It's bliss not worrying about losing keys, and if I'm not home I can tell someone the outside combination and get them to leave parcels in the porch (we change both combinations regularly).

MaJoady · 02/01/2020 10:26

My neighbours have one that takes an 6 or 8 (can't remember) digit code and they say they'd never go back to keys.

LemonadeAndSchnapps · 02/01/2020 10:30

We have a tale conexis too. We really like it and have never had a problem with being locked out. You can have it connected to your phone as well (will always need a fingerprint or password to get in so if she loses her phone then that shouldn't be an issue) and it comes with little coin things that act as the "key", but if she has it on her phone she can just not have a key, maybe?

Scotmummy1216 · 02/01/2020 10:48

It was on the gadget show the other day and it was shown they can be easily hacked i wouldn't trust them.

tentative3 · 02/01/2020 10:56

We noticed a fair few of them in Belgium last year so presumably there are options acceptable to insurers. I'd be interested for a future house so will follow and see if you get any more replies!

Dh can break into any of the 4 digit key safes with the spinny numbers in minutes. It's his favourite party trick to get me to reset the safe and see how long it takes him. Hmm

He can feel the safe jump/give a bit when he gets the right number.

Will look at the connexis one, thanks.

I think something with a keypad rather than spinning numbers is probably OK. Phone app one also good.

Personally I wouldn’t go to all this bother, maybe your DD needs to
be more responsible, give her a new key and make it clear it’s the last one she gets so if she’s locked out she will need to wait to be let in.

VivaLeBeaver · 02/01/2020 12:19

Sadly she’s 18yo so will sometimes come home at 2am and I don’t want waking up. And the other issue is without a key she’ll go out mid afternoon and leave the house unlocked.

OP posts:
VivaLeBeaver · 02/01/2020 12:21

We need to change the lock anyway as dh isn’t happy with the fact someone potentially has the key. She lost it at someone’s house party, it isn’t as if she’s just dropped it in the street and if found nobody would know which house it belongs to.

Thedeadwood · 02/01/2020 12:22

So she’s paying for these new locks that you’re going to install then?

mencken · 02/01/2020 12:23

my thoughts exactly. 18 is way too old to be this dippy.

LuluJakey1 · 02/01/2020 12:27

Ring her when she is out and tell her you have been burgled, they got on with a key and her stuff has gone. Might make her think.

AutumnRose1 · 02/01/2020 12:33

OP if your DD can’t be trusted with a key, she’ll manage to screw up any system. Just get a new lock.

VivaLeBeaver · 02/01/2020 12:34

Yes, she will be paying for the new lock.

We have a connexis, it's great. It is battery powered but they last quite a while and it plays a tune when you unlock it if the batteries are going flat so you have plenty of time to change them. If it does go flat you can use a 9v battery to give it enough power to open it.

My DH uses the phone app rather than a fob, DS and I use a fob. If a fob gets lost it can be deactivated via the app so anyone that finds it can't use it. We also sent a key to my Dad's mobile phone when he got locked out of his home, so he could go into our house and get a cuppa till we were home.

VivaLeBeaver · 02/01/2020 12:52

The connexis has a lot of 1* reviews on Amazon from people who have been locked out.

I’ve now found the ultion smart lock which can work via a phone app and/or key pad but keeps your key lock which you can use instead. So I guess if the app fails you can still use the key. We have an ultion lock on the door already so it’s compatible with that which is good.

Family member works in security and will not have anything wireless in his home security wise. Too easy to hack or malfunction.
Not a chance I'd be going keyless for a door. We have a keysafe hidden and its one you punch the numbers into.

JKScot4 · 02/01/2020 14:09

I thought she was going to be 13/14!! 18 and keeps losing her key, that’s ridiculous, if she can’t be responsible I’d be telling her not to knock the door after 10pm, I’m sure that’ll improve her key losing skills, she’s taking the piss.

UndomesticHousewife · 04/01/2020 12:47

Use a keypad key safe outside the door. They are not easy to get into at all. Put a key in it when she's out only if you're concerned about it.
I have 18 year olds we also had lots of lost key situations

notapizzaeater · 04/01/2020 12:52

Ooh we've a ultion lock, I'm off to look at the smart lock.

Expensive loss of keys, ultion cost a fortune each !
