Sand and Replace Old Floorboards or Put in New Ones?

Please help me decide. We have some very knackered pine floorboards in our kitchen. We can either sand and repair them (a lot of them are broken at the edges) causing lots of dust and mess, or we can put in new real oak ones that will have no gaps in between them etc. My dh thinks old ones are more appealing, but the mess and disruption with sanding them is putting me off. Basically, the two options are the same price. Which would you do??

How much of a gap is there between the old boards and how "broken" are they at the ends? Sanding and lacquering will make them look more appealing, but if there are big gaps and broken bits it will still look crappy, IMO. Maybe if they were original oak floorboards it would be worth the effort, but pine??

If tis the same cost, I would go for new oak boards. Definitely.

Thanks Mellin. I really prefer putting in new ones, but dh thinks it will ruin the character of the house. I keep telling him its PINE--what the Victorians used as sub-flooring.
