Neighbour connecting soil pipe to mine?

JLbaby · 30/12/2019 16:15

My next door neighbour is in the process of renovating and wants to put a toilet upstairs like I have - terraced house so our toilets upstairs would back on to each other (main bathrooms are both downstairs). He has asked if he can connect his soil pipe to mine to avoid having to do the pipe work and drainage, I have no idea about plumbing or pipe work so no idea if this is a good idea or not, does anyone know?!

My instinct says no, as what happens if they block up their pipes, would that affect mine? I’m a bit clueless on this but don’t want to come across as Un-neighbourly as they seem really nice and don’t want to have any animosity. Any advice on this would be great, thank you!

I wouldn't for the reason you gave. If anything goes wrong it will muddy the waters so to speak in regards to responsibility. Do they have an alternative?

JLbaby · 30/12/2019 16:26

They’ve suggested perhaps a macerator as they said they can’t afford the new pipe work and drainage. I assume that wouldn’t affect my pipes?

I wouldn't. It would make selling more complicated.

His financial constraints are not your problem.

Starbonnet123 · 30/12/2019 16:29

You would probably have a problem if you came to sell your house as you are taking on responsibility for their waste water and sewerage and prospective buyers may be put off

PotteringAlong · 30/12/2019 16:29

Nooooooo. No. Don’t do it.

Disfordarkchocolate · 30/12/2019 16:33

No from me too. They need to find a solution that doesn't impact on you.

tattychicken · 30/12/2019 16:34

We have something (sort of) similar in that our neighbours share our cesspit, and their waste pipes cross our land to get to the cesspit.
It was all in the deeds, including rights to access the drains and financial responsibilities for upkeep etc. It's fine with us, but this is a pre existing long standing arrangement dating back 60 years when the house was built. I wouldn't agree to their suggestion, it would involve something similar on a smaller scale, and how do you benefit ? Will they pay you?

AJPTaylor · 30/12/2019 16:37

Cheeky fucker!
No would be the answer!

JLbaby · 30/12/2019 16:38

They have said they’d give me some money (haven’t said how much), however in the long run that wouldn’t really benefit me if there are problems and especially if there will be problems when it comes to selling. Not that I will be selling any time soon!

Looks fairly unanimous to me!

Also, the soil pipes Might not be wide enough to handle more toilets.

Gross I know, but the soil pipe at my house blocks occassionally because the builder out in a smaller pipe than he should have. It had become a nightmare since next door had a baby and flush baby wipes down (idiots).

Wauden · 30/12/2019 20:54

Don't do it!!! And don't sign anything!!!
You need to talk to the organisation that handles waste water and they can help you.
Doesn't matter that the neighbours seem nice.

SwedishEdith · 30/12/2019 20:58

No. And you don't start a renovation like that if you can't afford to do all of the key parts.

BelfastNonBlonde · 30/12/2019 21:01

No

LivingDeadGirlUK · 30/12/2019 21:03

No don't do it, and also I would be concerned about a saniflow/macerator being installed if their new toilet backs onto a bedroom as they can be very noisy depending on the unit installed.

misspiggy19 · 30/12/2019 21:03

No way. Don’t do it

megletthesecond · 30/12/2019 21:05

No way.

Sillyscrabblegames · 30/12/2019 21:06

No way. Awful idea.

PennyGold · 30/12/2019 21:09

Absolutely not! A Saniflow macerator at work ALWAYS blocked, we had to get a plumber out minimum once a month.
I'd just say unfortunately we can't as we may be selling our house in the future and it would cause legal issues.

FeckaDecka · 30/12/2019 21:23

Macerators are noisy and rubbish.

Nope! Who is responsible if there's a problem afterwards. Don't do it!

GaraMedouar · 30/12/2019 21:37

No! Definitely no.

JLbaby · 30/12/2019 22:00

Right that’s a definite no then! I can’t really stop them installing a macerator though can I? Won’t that need some sort of pipe work too?

Jada1234 · 30/12/2019 22:13

No way.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 30/12/2019 22:46

the saniflow units have a pump in so the waste can be pumped accross to the existing soil pipe in their bathroom.
