Lawn edging - neat or naff?

The back lawn at the house we bought last year has a wavy edge that migrates a bit and isn't very neat. I don't mind the natural look too much, and tend to think lawn edging is a bit naff, but lately the natural curve has been looking a bit wonky - possibly because our predecessors had it professionally maintained but we don't - and so I'm starting to waver a bit. I'd appreciate some views on whether edging would give us a permanent solution or just be another thing that needs to be maintained (whilst perhaps also looking a bit naff).

Yes, it needs maintaining. In terms of neat vs naff, it depends on the style of your garden. If the planting is naturalistic, then a neat edge looks naff. If it’s a formal garden, then a messy edge looks naff.

I think it's both - suits some styles of gardens but not others.

It sounds like it suits you, so go for it. Just check that your mower goes happily over whichever type of edging you choose

Neat

Neat and practical. We have metal edging like this. It keeps a nice sharp edge between the lawn and border.

Just recut it's with a edging blade and trim with edge cutting things, using a different material doesn't work well with lawn mowers.
