What do you regret?

Every time I get into the bath I kick myself for getting a small, cheap one.

I am not a small lady and the water never submerges me the way I wish it would.

I regret not splashing out sorry on a big, deep, luxurious bath.

Misery loves company so tell me what decision you regret about your home?

Any building work, re modelling etc in this house was never fully finished, we ran out of money or workmen just didnt fully complete. I got tired of having them in my house and skimped on the finish. That was up until last year when husband and I started earning real money with our franchise and I’ve ripped through the house doing things properly.
Money will always dictate how well a job gets done

I regret not sorting out the floorboards in my kitchen and hallway before I had vinyl tiles fitted. I didn't realised how crap that floorboards were, the little dip in one bit and the squeaks really annoy me.

Gotanewname · 30/12/2019 13:25

Moving to a beautiful house in the arse end of nowhere. I hate it, it’s so isolated and I’m lonely.

bettybattenburg · 30/12/2019 13:27

Sorry to say but large baths are not all that expensive - we have shoehorned a 6 foot long, deep, wide bath in to our small bathroom. You win the environmentally friendly award though if it's any consolation.

I regret buying this house though in some ways, there's nothing wrong with it as such but I didn't like it when we looked at it and I still don't like it. It's just a place to sleep.

CarrotBarrot · 30/12/2019 13:29

Not painting the bathroom before the fittings went in.
Choosing a new kitchen window under pressure and ending up with one I can't reach to open.
Generally patching things up rather than having the job done properly.
We had the house reworked with lots of new sockets and I still find places we could have done with one.

(I'll admit we did spend a lot of money on a big solid bath as we never intend to buy one again.)

My front door had the handle on the right, which was illogical because then the open door blocked you from entering the house which runs off to the left. It was impossible to open the door and carry stuff straight in. So I cleverly ordered my new front door with the handle on the left. Much better, the door opens against the wall and you can carry stuff straight into the house. Except now the light switch is behind the door when you open it! So you can’t just reach in and put the light on, you have to enter in the dark then close the door and walk around behind it to press the light switch. It’s massively annoying. I suppose I could have it moved but it would cost £££ to hire an electrician and then repair the wall and ceiling and redecorate.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/12/2019 13:39

Having carpet in my hall. We have a small house and it would have made so much sense to extend the karndean that is in the kitchen through to the front door. Despite a shoes off policy the hall carpet still looks perpetually grubby.

AvaSnowdrop · 30/12/2019 13:41

I also regret not repairing the balcony outside the upstairs lounge window. It would have cost £££ to have the balcony floor repaired to take the weight of people, plus I’d have to replace the handrail which would have cost thousands. It was much cheaper to just chuck the whole balcony in a skip and brick up the patio door that used to lead outside. I do wish I still had that balcony though, it would have been lovely in the summer. I just couldn’t afford to repair it.

suziedoozy · 30/12/2019 13:42

@avasnowdrop rather than having an electrician move the switch change the light to one with a sensor on that turns on when you walk into the house. We have one like that in our porch and it makes me happy every time I walk I to it!

OneMoreLight · 30/12/2019 13:44

@avasnowdrop get a smartbulb, when you pull up outside you can turn it on from your phone 🙂

suziedoozy · 30/12/2019 13:46

We are on the side of a hill & needed a metal balustrade made to make sure people couldn’t fall off the patio (about a 2m drop) and I regret having the gate down to the garden put on the far left hand side as it’s the space that get the sun longest in the day & would be perfect for a sun lounger but that would mean blocking up the gate!

Petty but annoying!

I know they're not, but we're paying for everything at once so I had my blinkers on that the bigger baths were 2-3 times the cost of the one we got. I thought I could deal with it but having wet and cold shoulders, boobs, knees, or usually a combination of those is incredibly annoying.

I think I'll be having more showers once the tiles are up Sad

That's a huge difference! We paid about $50 extra.

IHeartKingThistle · 30/12/2019 17:33

Matt black tiles in the en-suite. Never look clean and I hate them.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 31/12/2019 00:10

Travertine floor tiles, despite sealing, if any oil, butter, orange juice splashes onto the floor it either causes etching, grease spots or staining as travertine is so porous, it cost a fortune as well, never again, porcelain tiles all the way for me next time.

Dementedmagpie · 31/12/2019 00:15

We chose mosaic tiles in the kitchen. DH hated putting them up and now we both think it was a mistake (they've been up over 10 years!) We are not tidy and I feel the mosaic tiles adds to the hectic-ness if the work surface is already cluttered.

pinksquash13 · 31/12/2019 00:23

Cheap, thin carpet on the stairs. Didn't like it as soon as it was fitted. Worth spending a little more next time.

OhTheRoses · 31/12/2019 00:31

In my first house I had black and white Amtico tiles in the kitchen. I also had two cats. It wasn't a good look.

Imicola · 31/12/2019 07:34

A cheap loo in the upstairs bathroom, I hate it! And the downstairs loo is prone to skid marks. Argh! I also regret not removing or changing the fitted cupboards in the main bedroom as they are a hotch potch! And as a pp said, I wish we had sorted the downstairs flooring properly rather than doing it ourselves as we now have gaps between the planks of vinyl.

Lunaballoon · 31/12/2019 17:04

A bath with a side filler valve and central drain instead of regular taps and plug hole at the end.

It looks modern and new but the bath is very slow to fill and I often end up accidentally letting water out by lying on the drain!

IDontDrinkTea · 31/12/2019 17:14

I persuaded DH to paint our bedroom sage green when I was heavily pregnant. I’ve never really liked it. I’m just waiting for a suitable period of time to pass so I can suggest repainting it again 😬

iswhois · 31/12/2019 17:18

Seriously overpaying for this house

Had no idea the gravity of the work which needed doing and the costs involved, which we will probably not make back upon selling

Hoppinggreen · 31/12/2019 17:22

Not pushing ourselves just a bit more when buying our forever home
If we had gone for the house DH wanted it was £40k more than the one we wanted (affordable) but would be worth around £200k more than the one we did buy, plus it’s more of a village location
I do like where we live but whenever I drive past the house we didn’t buy I kick myself
But maybe it was the right decision, we will never know
