Would you rent in a neighbourhood you’re considering moving to, or rent the one you’re already in?

We live in London and like our neighbourhood but not our part of it (it’s very gritty compared with the rest). We’ve just sold to a cash buyer and have to rent as they want to move fast and we won’t be able to buy anything that quickly. And we’re actually not sure where to move to anyway!

We’ve narrowed it down to a nicer part of our current neighbourhood or another area, which is a very established family place (still in london), and is about half an hour away (by car, we don’t have a car though, although could lease an electric one).

Would you rent locally? Or in the new area?

We have children in nursery / school where we are currently, complicating things!

One dc is on the waiting list in nurseries in the new area, just in case, and has been for a year now. School is trickier as I don’t know if any have a space... but the other area has great schools. It’s lovely place, just a little bit boring!

What would you do? Rent locally or rent in the possible other place?

Stay in current neighbourhood and don't disrupt childcare etc. Who knows where you may end up buying

Froozen · 28/12/2019 10:38

That’s what I was thinking, marieG, but had it in my head that if we go to the other place, we’ll have to buy there as we wouldn’t want to disrupt the kids twice.

It’s so confusing! Neither feels quite perfect, but nowhere does, so I’m probably chasing a perfection that doesn’t exist!

Stay put, until you know where you are moving to. All the other stuff, finding new nursery, schools, car leasing etc sounds like more hassle than you need before you've even decided where you'll be living.

We also ended up in a different area than we planned to be so I would stay where you’re at the moment.
I would start doing visits to the area you are interested in and try out public transport in case you would need to decide quickly. In some areas the situation might look very different between holidays and school time.

Stay where you are for the time being unless you are pretty certain of the area you might move to permanently. Depending on the date you agree to complete on the sale of your present home there will be a lot more choice for you to buy coming along in January anyway.

PS try to go for full 4 weeks between exchange and completion if you can, even moving fast this is the norm.

Thanks all! You’re probably right. I think I am torn because - if we move to the other neighbourhood - I think I’d like to get on with things rather than being in limbo!

Wish there was somewhere neighbourhood I was desperate to live in, and couldn’t wait to get to! Ha!
