We are in the process of buying a house , survey has done and mortgage approved. But first I liked the house this was the only house that looked much better and affordable. Now am in confusion, staircase in the lounge and this makes me unhappy about it . I dont know wat to do. Is there anything can do about?

@PostNotInHaste yea we just thinking about the folding door for kitchen that would not take much space. Making the upstairs separate I think it won't work our landing is small when you step in 2 bedroom and toilet is just there. Only thing I can do is palcing the tv under the stairs maybe.

@HoHoHolly we just thinking of installing a folding door for the Kitchen this will help the heat escaping I guess. First our plan was to buy a 3 bedroom house but we couldn't afford it and planning to live at this house for 2 or 3 years to buy our dream house.

@BubblesBuddy this house doesn't require any work and the carpet , kitchen and toilet are only years old. Only problem is the staircase and we dont have much many for any extension. We only putting down the deposit of £26k this is what we can afford for now.

I rent my house and have a knocked through front - living room and open plan stairs , the house is a swine to heat .
I haven't got round to it yet but I am planning on putting curtains from floor to ceiling along the stairs , if i can find long enough ones .

One of those bifold doors should be fine.

To me it sounds like a doable compromise for the first few years, not a dealbreaker.

Houses are difficult to heat if they are not insulated and have inefficient heating. If you make sure your heating and insulation are efficient, the house will be fine . It’s not as if you are not using the upstairs. If you choose an old house I do understand they are more difficult to heat, but it’s choice.

We have always insulated our houses effectively and the majority of my current house is now open Plan. I have a huge L shaped hall and use it for sitting in and the computer work station is there too. Not to mention the Grand piano! The stairs go up from there and it’s not cold. You do have to think about efficient heating and insulation when you buy an older house and be prepared to pay for it. Suggest this to DH. He might change his mind if he’s not prepared to shell out.

I agree carpets make bedrooms quieter. Most of mine are carpeted.

warm air will naturally rise through the house (as will water vapour and cooking smells) if there are walls and doors to prevent it.

Even if you have good loft insulation, the ceiling spiders will be basking in tropical heat, and any cool air e.g. from draughts or bare floorboards, will stratify in the downstairs rooms.

You can put Portiere Rods with lifting curtains on the downstaies doors, which will help, and thicj window curtains, especially over patio doors.

I have a 3-story house and find it impossible to keep the hall warm, because the stairwell is open to the top, even though the rooms off it have doors.

this house doesn't require any work and the carpet , kitchen and toilet are only years old.

If your sole reason for buying is to get on the ladder and trade up in a couple of years, you are FAR better off buying somewhere needing work...

Dealbreaker for me. Our first house had stairs in the living room, didn't have kids then but it was still a pain in the arse with tv noise when I was on nights.

Our houses since haven't had this issue
