Help changing lightbulb (I know, I know...)

Hi, can anyone tell me what kind of spotlight fitting this is and how on earth I change it? No part of it seems to move, I've gently pulled on the casing and it's resisting and I don't want to pull too hard in case it breaks.

I also can't use the spotlight sucker tool I have as the surface of the spotlight isn't smooth.

We inherited them in our new house and now the bulbs are starting to go, so really need to work out how to do this!

Can you twist the whole white part to remove the casing?

LittlePickleHead · 20/12/2019 15:43

NO, I've tried but it's just not moving - I don't want to force it too hard without knowing that's what I'm supposed to do.

Literally no part of it seems to be loose or budget at all. We have these all over our kitchen and bathroom, very annoying!

Ours look a little different to that but we have to push me twist and they pop out

CatInTheDaytime · 20/12/2019 15:50

Yes have you tried pushing the bulb part inwards, then twist.

LittlePickleHead · 20/12/2019 15:51

Yes I've tried pushing the bulb, it doesn't move at all. I'm going to try turning the whole thing again as that seems like the most likely option

It looks like it possibly has one of those springy prong things. You'll need to pull it straight down. The prongs will eventually release and you'll be left with the light fitting out but attached to the wires.

LittlePickleHead · 20/12/2019 15:56

The whole thing? I can't pull it out - I've tried twisting, pushing, pulling.

I got the end of a knife under the edge of the fitting and it's moved out slightly, but the whole thing just won't come out

Not helpful I know, but we have a similar bulb that is currently dangling out of the ceiling as the little metal spring thing needs to be put back.

Watching Masterchef last night and a mouse plummeted from the light fitting (we are in the middle of the countryside) and hit the wooden floor with a bang stunning itself.

Bastard cat managed to open one sleepy eye before going back to sleep. He may be sacked.

Namaste6 · 20/12/2019 16:17

Hi again OP
As the PP mentioned - there's a little metal spring thing. It's probably in there right. I would use a little force around the edges and see if it comes out. The whole thing should come out. Bulb and white casing together.

Namaste6 · 20/12/2019 16:18

Not right! Tight!

LittlePickleHead · 20/12/2019 16:22

Right, so I've just tried to apply proper force but it's not coming out, i've run a screwdriver above the white disk to see if I can find a spring but nothing. It's down about 0.5cm and won't come down any further!

Ok- shove it back in again and try to take a knife along the seem of the edge of the bulb and the white casing. Does it feel like it will release? Also - you have switched the lights off?

msmith501 · 20/12/2019 16:32

We have similar. Ours unscrew (anti-clockwise obvs) and then the bulb unscrew after. Tricky buggers!

PanannyPanoo · 20/12/2019 16:33

We have to get a little suckery jobby to get ours out.

LittlePickleHead · 20/12/2019 16:47

PanannyPannoo - I have one but it won't work as the lightbulb isn't smooth so it can't seal onto it.

I have turned the lights off - means I can't see now though Grin so may have to try again tomorrow.

There is a possibility that the bulb is non replaceable and so the whole unit needs to be replaced. This will then be a job for a suitably qualified person.

PigletJohn · 21/12/2019 23:38

I too think the bulbs will be non-replaceable.

I have seen lamps with similar white steel rings, and they are difficult to remove, but if you put on a pair of household rubber gloves (for extra grip) and press up on the ring, and turn it in an unscrewing direction, it will probably detach after about an eighth of a turn and fall on your head and the lamp part will fall out and dangle by its wires.

If for some reason you like holes in ceilings, you can buy other downlighters or eyeballs, but I strongly recommend one that will take an ordinary bulb-shaped LED bulb, with an ordinary bayonet (B22) or screw (ES) fitting. For small bulbs, SES fitting. You can buy them in any high street or supermarket at low cost, they are easy to fit and remove and you don't need anything special. If you want dimmable ones you will have to buy a compatible dimmer (this technology is still developing)

The days of extra-low-voltage and extra-small or funny shaped lamps are pretty well over now. There's no need for them and they are a nuisance. Lamps with transformers hidden in the ceiling go wrong, and are extra trouble and expense, no point in them any more.
