Thoughts about corner house

Hi, we saw a house we really liked but it is in the corner - it is a residential road so in terms of noise, it is not that bad. The advantage I guess there is no immediate neighbour (no party wall) on one side, but I am wondering what your thoughts are about corner house/plot. Although we liked it, we are wondering if it will be difficult to sell in the future. Any thoughts - would you purchase a corner plot?

Can you do a diagram?

Idontkowmyname · 17/12/2019 17:36

As far as I was aware corner plots were highly regarded since they tend to be bigger blocks and you don’t have immediate neighbours on one side.

ThisIsSanta · 17/12/2019 17:38

Corner plots are highly sought after where I come from originally, and where I live now (opposite end of the country). Is there a reason you think it is not desirable?

meandmycoffeecup · 17/12/2019 17:40

Yes that’s what I’m thinking but some people pointed out less privacy as more people will be walking past as you are occupying 2 streets

This is why I’m confused and asked for a diagram because to me corner plots are better? We have the corner plot and could park 4/5 cars at the side of our house if we wanted to. That’s a good thing.

SciFiScream · 17/12/2019 17:41

I have a kind of corner plot. We've got the biggest parking space and garden by quite some way out of all the houses here. (Can tell when looking on google earth)

I'd say, from my experience, a corner plot is better. Shares all the other characteristics with other houses in the area (noise, location, etc) it's just bigger.

HappyAsASandboy · 17/12/2019 17:41

I think corner plots are normally desirable as they often have a wider garden that come down the 'corner' side of the house.

Unless it's the corner of two main roads and so would get lots of traffic noise from both? Or is in the corner of a cul-de-sac and has a cramped garden?

meandmycoffeecup · 17/12/2019 18:06

Here’s the diagram sorry for my drawingGrin The living room is what is in the corner but there it is not directly in the walkway as there is still a a piece of land/garden between the house and the walkway.

I think it looks fine OP!

meandmycoffeecup · 17/12/2019 18:23

Thanks everyone. I am concerned that people will peak through the window as they walk past although the small piece of land separating the house and the walkway should hopefully be enough to discourage them!

Daps have a 1930s semi, corner plot. Best access, biggest garden, room to extend, drive way and garage. Corner plot round here is the best too. No one can peak through windows here tbf.

CatAndHisKit · 18/12/2019 00:42

I think people don't like that their garden would be over-looked from both sides /streets due to the angles.

EL8888 · 18/12/2019 00:51

I would love a corner plot =more garden and less neighbours sounds great! But yeah it would depend if either road was a main road or a rat run

HeddaGarbled · 18/12/2019 01:02

Corner plots are desirable because you only have neighbours one side, and you usually have a bigger plot. Is the “walkway” the same thing as a path/pavement? Privacy will always be a bit of an issue if you have windows close to a pavement. Some people grow hedges or put up blinds, but some people just accept it.

Bluerussian · 18/12/2019 01:03

I think a corner house is nice. Presumably it won't be next to a big road and if there is space between house and road you can have a tall fence or wall. You can also have a garage around the back and if there is already one built in at the front, it can be converted to another room. I'd go for a corner house any time.

RainMinusBow · 18/12/2019 01:05

We have a corner plot and like it because our garden is bigger than our neighbours' gardens! Also gives us more options should we wish to extend in the future 😊

Booberella9 · 18/12/2019 01:25

More of an edge than a corner OP!

People walking past the side of my garden would annoy me. Noise, fag smoke, litter.

How busy are the 2 roads? Cars and people? Times of day e.g. is there a pub nearby, bus stop, school, shop? Do you care how busy the roads are?

7salmonswimming · 18/12/2019 01:30

I actually don’t like corner plots. Traffic idling at the corner, waiting to turn left/right. Can’t use the garden as well because of passing ransoms. You’ll need a high fence to block peepers.

Then again, neither do I like semi-detached or terraced houses. Less privacy and less light.

Basically, I’d like an entirely secluded, fully detached house instead of the tiny flat in a purpose built block I currently live in Grin

DontCallMeShitley · 18/12/2019 01:41

I lived in a house on a corner plot. Neighbours on one side and the garden of the one in the next road was the full width of our plot. The fence was high enough that no-one could see over, and the end of our garden had mature shrubs and trees so apart from where it was a but thin after being trimmed no-one could see in there either.

I loved it there. However wouldn't buy a house that was overlooked or not protected from the street for security reasons.

DontCallMeShitley · 18/12/2019 01:42

a bit thin, not a but thin

meandmycoffeecup · 18/12/2019 08:47

Yes the walkway is the same as pavement. There are windows close to the pavement that we can grow hedges on but with relatively new development they are strict that we should not build anything tall. The garden has full height brick fence so not a problem. I am more concerned about the windows near the pavement.

I am now more reassured with the responses here Smile
