Please can someone explain thermostats to me before I have to get a divorce?

So, we have just had a new fancy thermostat installed because the old one was in the kitchen, the warmest room in the house.

This one can be put anywhere, so its currently in the sitting room. It is set at 22 degrees

Last night, all the radiators went off. My husband said it was because the sitting room had got up to 22 degrees. But the temperature on the thermostat said 20 degrees. It was so cold!

The temperature on the display has never gone above 20 degrees. So does this mean that the radiator in the sitting room is incapable of getting the room to 22 degrees? Or is it something else?

I freely admit that I have no clue about thermostats! Thanks.

Do you have a timer as well as a thermostat,?

MarieG10 · 17/12/2019 17:26

If the timer is on, and the thermostat is set to a temperature that hasn't been reached then the heating should stay on
Do the radiators in that room where you have the thermostat have thermostatic valves on the radiators and cutting off the water flow through the radiators. If so, then they should be fully opened

Movinghouseatlast · 17/12/2019 17:44

Yes, the thermostatic valve on the radiator is fully open. There is a timer, we set it to stay on all day.

Which brand of fancy thermostat?
You say the timer is set to be on the whole time, is this timer in the thermostat or somewhere else? If it's somewhere else does the fancy thermostat have its own timer too?
Are the radiators hot when the thermostat says 20?

Teddyreddy · 17/12/2019 18:00

Does the new thermostat have its own timer? Our hearing has a timer in the airing cupboard. The thermostat for our kitchen underfloor heating has a separate timer on it - however, if the airing cupboard timer is off then the underfloor heating is off no matter what its timer says.

Our thermostat has a symbol to show the hearing should be on it's below temperature. Does yours?

HotPenguin · 17/12/2019 18:07

Why are you heating house to 22 degrees all day and all night??

Longtalljosie · 17/12/2019 18:10

Presumably because it never gets to 22 degrees and she’s always cold!

Is the thermostat wireless? Putting it in the warmest room is going to make the rest of the house cold. But if it never gets to 22, it shouldn’t turn off...

fluffiphlox · 17/12/2019 18:15

Twenty’s plenty.

teentree · 17/12/2019 18:28

There is a timer, we set it to stay on all day.

Does that not explain why it went off at night?

Movinghouseatlast · 17/12/2019 19:24

Gosh. By all day I mean when we are awake. So from 8am to 11pm- that's the setting 'all day's.By last night I meant yesterday at 7pm.

OP posts:
Movinghouseatlast · 17/12/2019 19:28

The timer is in the thermostat, it's a Worcester. It is wireless.

It's not in the warmest room- the old thermostat was in the warmest room.

The whole house is currently boiling except for the room it is in, the sitting room which feels chilly. Thermostat, which is in sitting room, is saying 20 degrees.

So I think the radiator is not big enough/powerful enough for the room. Is that right?

If you have a single thermostat for the house it's usual to have it in the hallway away from any radiators or drafts so you can get a good average point.
If it's turning off at 20 when set to 22 then it sounds like something is either faulty or set incorrectly
As others have said make sure there isn't a timer set on the thermostat or the boiler that is overriding the temperature
Check that the time is set correctly on the thermostat and the boiler timer.
Check the WiFi connection is working correctly
Check all radiator valves are open and that radiators are bled properly.
Otherwise it might be worth getting somebody out to have a look.

wonkylegs · 17/12/2019 19:33

Radiators May be poorly sized you can do a rough check online goggle radiator sizing calculator
There might be draughts
Radiator might need bleeding as it's not heating up properly

PigletJohn · 17/12/2019 19:49

you say there is a TRV in the same room as the room thermostat. This is incorrect.

A photo of your room stat, and of the TRV, will help.

Wireless stats are more prone to go wring than wired stats, because there is the added risk of a failure of the communication link, or of a close neighbour having a similar wireless stat that takes control of your system. How old is yours, and how old are the batteries?

The room stat will indicate in some way when it is calling for heat, for example a little light or a picture of a flame might come on. Do you see it doing this? Does it do it all the time that the indicated room temperature on the thermostat is lower than the indicated target temperature on the thermostat? When it calls for heat, do you see the boiler is running?

When the stat and the boiler are both in heating mode, are all the radiators fully hot all over? Or only some radiators? Or some radiators partially hot?

What time did "all the heating" go off? Be precise please. What time did it srart again?

Also please show photos of the old boiler controls.

LittleBearPad · 17/12/2019 19:52

Is there air in the sitting room radiator so it’s not heating up as it should

CatEnabler · 17/12/2019 19:57

@HotPenguin 21.5 is considered normal room temperature and has been for years, that's why...Hmm

EastCoastDamsel · 17/12/2019 21:25

OMG, don't even get me started on heating systems. We are now 6 weeks (6weeks!!!!!!) into an ongoing saga of getting our new smart thermostats sorted.

We have undergone extensive renovations and improvements including installation of UFH in a section of the house and smart thermostats throughout.

Only now do I know for sure that the stats are actually controlling the sections of heating they should be, never mind having sorted correct levels on the radiator valves, temps on stats and timings of coming on and off.

Nightmare

Pickpick101 · 18/12/2019 07:44

21.5 is considered normal room temperature and has been for years, that's why...hmm

I've never heard that before , who considers it normal? That would be too warm for me , we have it set to 17/18c

Barnseyboyo · 18/12/2019 07:46

Ffs. The OP can heat her house to whatever temperature she wants. Twenty would not be plenty for me. Not everyone wants to sit freezing in their house to make a point

Pickpick101 · 18/12/2019 07:49

Yep she can , I'm asking why 21.5 is the "norm" . Not sure why you think I'd sit in a freezing house to make a point , to people on the internet?

dementedpixie · 18/12/2019 08:04

Mine is set to 19 degrees.

Binterested · 18/12/2019 08:06

I’d be in tears at 17/18 Sad

dementedpixie · 18/12/2019 08:09

www.google.com/amp/s/www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/bills/article-5366847/amp/What-best-temperature-home.html energy savings trust recommends 18-21 degrees so don't know where 21.5 came from

Kelsoooo · 18/12/2019 08:13

What bloody relevance is it she wants her house at 22? Honestly?

I keep mine at 22/23.

Wanna know why? Because I want it at that temperature. Any thing less and I'm cold.

So for everyone's that gonna nag me, or needs it spelling out again that we all have individual preferences.

My medication makes me feel cold.
Wearing too many clothes, or clothes that feel restrictive (including, jeans, jumpers with cuffed sleeves, bras that are brand new, teeshirts, my hair bobble, make-up that's been on over twelve hours and even yoga pants at times) makes me cranky and grumpy.
When my feet get cold, I can't warm them up, then I can't sleep, which means I'm sleep deprived and I have a job that requires driving.
Because my youngest will not wear socks.
Because I fucking want to.

OP have you bled the radiator?

FixTheBone · 18/12/2019 08:29

Some of the new Worcester thermostats have a sensor that detects if anyone is at home - is it detecting that the house (room) is empty and shutting down an hour or two after you go to bed....
