Plane noise in SW London

I know the plane noise over Barnes, Kew, East Sheen, St Margs and Richmond Green is bad. If you live there does it bother you?
And are areas like Wimbledon, Teddington and Hampton Court any better?
Considering moving to this area for decent schools at primary and secondary but wondering if the plane noise would be too bad as we'd want to stay there long term. Would prefer the top three areas as the commute better but if the noise is considerably better in other places we might look there instead.

@ohwhattodowithmylife really?! Whereabouts in Wimbledon did you live? I've lived here for over 35 years and it's really fine - albeit I don't live in the village.

Putney here (the Wandsworth side). You hear the odd one but I can't say it's ever disturbed me. I've been living on a building site for three years though, while they finish the rest of the development. So I think I have become good at tuning out machine-y noise.

I used to live near the heliport at Battersea. Now that was noisy...

@HJ40 I wouldn’t say I found zone 2 peaceful at all. It just wasn’t the traffic but the little gardens and 20 of them within earshot and loads of people everywhere, parks included.

@PlausibleSuit I used to jog past the heliport. That was something else!

I’m in Wandsworth, not on of your areas I know but I can tell you that the noise really varies. Mainly according to direction (easterlies/westerlies as mentioned above) but also the weather. The planes seem to be much louder on clear days. And there’s other factors, eg some pilots seem to obey the height rules and others don’t, respite periods, weekend vs weekday, school holidays vs not, etc. So do be careful comparing one “snapshot” from one area with another elsewhere...

Also bear in mind the whole 3rd runway issue, who knows who that will change things but it certainly isn’t going to improve anything.

Ultimately you are either someone who is really bothered by noise or not... I am unfortunately! We have put in double glazing and that really helps, but in the heat I end up getting up at 2am to shut everyone’s windows before the planes start...

BIWI - I lived there for many years also. It wasn't just the plane noise, helicopter, sirens. Just general background noise.

Can't say the noise ever bothered me in north London. In fact I used to have a resident owl! Maybe as I'm getting older I would notice it. Anyone think any difference between north London and sw London? I guess it's very dependant on location, parks nearby, wind, busy roads etc etc.

I'm still in favour of Wimbledon over Richmond way and think I'd cope with the noise levels there but will go and review again.

You might want to look at all the trackers for City Aiport, Luton and Stanstead. They show you the decibels in some places. I doubt it’s that great. You may or may not notice it more. I took hardly any notice of plane noise when I was in zone 2 but having lived in a pretty quiet place for almost 5 years, I notice it an awful lot whenever I go to visit.

Lol I like a good set of numbers Grin Any school stats, crime stats, depravation stats, air quality, plane noise, broadsheet readership, nail bar prices (maybe not) Grin Anyway, I hope you get a true idea of the new location before you move Wink
