Magnetic paint

I’m thinking about using this on a small area of wall in my kitchen, as it would be handy to be able to ‘pin’ up notices in that spot but it’s a bit of an awkward spot for an actual notice board.

Has anyone used this? Does it actually work?

Thanks

I've used magnetic blackboard paint on some of those little Ikea drawers for the DC. It's not great. It is fine for small bits of paper but not anything that has multiple sheets of paper.

That doesn’t sound hopeful. It was mostly going to be for notes from school/ clubs so there will be times when there are quite a few.

I wonder if I could find a thin enough cork mat I could cut it to size, paint it and stick it to the wall 🤔

I had to put several layers on and it still barely holds a very light paper thin magnet on a single sheet of paper. Wish I’d just put up a normal magnetic board.

I have just tested it for you! I have a magnetic front door key. It can't support it's own weight on the drawers, it slides down. The drawers only have 2 thin coats of the paint so it might work better with a thicker coating.

Cork wall tiles could work. We had them in the playroom for artwork when I was a child! You can get them in different shapes (squares/hexagons):

Glad I asked that would have been a total waste of time and money. Thank you for the cork tile link 🙂

I’ve got a wall painted with that - also for school stuff etc. It’s great for the kids to draw on, put on count downs etc. It works for magnets (think letter/numbers etc) by themselves no bother. For the heavier stuff I’ve glued a few 2p coins on to the wall which hold all the paperwork from school perfectly.

I converted an old mirror frame into a blackboard. I had your concerns so applied multiple coats of the magnetic paint (form toolstation or screwfix I think).
The paint is just normal paint with iron particles in it. The magnet sticks to the particles. If you apply one coat there are few particles = less magnetism. Many coats = more particles = more magnetism
I have stuck various magnets and things on there with nothing slipping. Use plenty of coats and you'll be fine.
You obv need decent magnets also.

I did mo;st of one wall with magnetic paint in DS1's room a few years back. It is great for magnetic poetry but anything larger than a flimsy piece of paper will not stay up. I did several coats and the paint is very hard to apply as it has the magnetic particles in it.
