Any thoughts on making rented flat more secure/burglar proof?

I'm about to move into a new rented flat. It's fairly secure in terms of an entry phone system etc but I'm not allowed to change the two locks to my flat.

I already have a surveillance camera and I was thinking of getting a simple wireless burglar alarm that I can have on at night, hopefully the monitors can be kept up with command strips. Confused

Any other thoughts? Recommendations on alarms also welcome.

Do you know when the locks were changed? I always change locks between tenants- you never know who might have had access to the keys so that’s something I’d be insisting on.

It's a new build so only building maintenance have extras. But obviously depends how trustworthy they are. Grin

I thought by law you could change the locks as long as they are put back to the original by the end of your tenancy?

Finfintytint · 12/12/2019 17:09

How accessible are your windows? Are you ground floor for example?

JoJoSM2 · 12/12/2019 17:15

@TheBabyAteMyBrain Are you sure? You’d be locking the landlord out so doesn’t sound legal.

I’ve got a Ring doorbell on the front door and a Ring surveillance camera on the back door. Both allow me to speak to anyone and the back door version allows me to sound an alarm & a light is triggered by movement at night.

Both record any activity so I could send to the police if required.

TheBabyAteMyBrain · 12/12/2019 17:59

@JoJoSM2 not sure at all, just a vague notion I've read it somewhere.

Thanks all, it's a third floor flat so fairly secure but I'm living there alone and want as much security as possible. It doesn't look like a tenant can change locks without agreement or very good reason e.g. the house has just been burgled and they need to make it safe again quickly.

So will go down the wireless alarm and camera route I think.

Fairly sure tenants can change the locks - they just have to be put back at the end of the tenancy.

Flutterby is there a chain on the front door? If not, it's worth asking if you can install one.

Flutterby63 · 12/12/2019 19:12

Thanks no will ask re chain.

From what I can tell, advice is that you shouldn't change locks if there is anything in agreement about no changes to property and/or no changes to locks specifically, and definitely not without permission.

I'm not going to risk it but will look at other options suggested here. Smile

Are you concerned about security when you are alone in the house, or when you are out?

If someone is going to kick the door in (which sounds like the only means of entry), alarms or cameras will not help you. Do you have hinge bolts? If not, these might make the door more secure from forced entry.

If you are concerned that site workers may still have keys that they should not have, try asking the LL to change the locks. If LL has given keys to the maintenance team then not much you can do.

Put a picture of a large dog in the window ... burglars don't like big angry dogs imho

Something like this

Any thoughts on making rented flat more secure/burglar proof?
Flutterby63 · 14/12/2019 08:39

Thanks everyone. The main thing is knowing when/if people are accessing the flat (I think the likelihood of people kicking doors down is v low for various reasons thankfully). I'll check out the bolt.
