Living in a bungalow

I’ve seen a bungalow for sale. Would we terribly miss our stairs? I feel a bit odd about sleeping on the group floor but would I get used to this?

Ground floor!

Demolish it and build a house?!

Lipperfromchipper · 10/12/2019 23:36

Why would you miss the stairs?? 🤣🤣 I live in a bungalow it’s not even something that enters my head that I’m not going “up” to bed. It will be easier when I get older too!!

Mumtofourandnomore · 10/12/2019 23:38

We love our bungalow, I don’t miss stairs at all. We have four children and find that we use the floor space far more than when we had an upstairs. Honestly, upstairs is just for sleeping, everybody being on one floor means we are all close together, but not on top of each other - it’s hard to explain but I can definitely recommend it.

BackforGood · 10/12/2019 23:39

I'd love to find a bungalow to live in - they sell for SUCH a premium around here though.
I didn't miss stairs at all when i had a ground floor maisonette.

GreyGardens88 · 10/12/2019 23:40

Personally I don't like bungalows, mind you my knees certainly would

mrbob · 10/12/2019 23:42

I live in Australia and most houses here traditionally were single storey. I love them! Now stairs annoy me and moving in is so much easier when you don’t need to cart stuff up and down. I agree they just feel different but I like it

MrsJ28903 · 10/12/2019 23:46

I have a funny niggle about fearing break ins when we are all sleeping on the ground floor. I am being irrational!

I like to go up to bed. You can't leave your windows open at night in a bungalow. I worry about intruders looking in.

confusednorthner · 10/12/2019 23:54

I'd only lived in a house and dh only ever in a bungalow. I completely get where you are coming from, dh thought I was nuts as couldn't sleep with windows open in summer. I even rigged up a intruder alarm😂
Honestly 20 years on and now on second bungalow I can't imagine ever living in a house again. All that time we'd waste going up and down looking for forgotten bits etc no thanks I'll stick to one level living.

Pipandmum · 10/12/2019 23:58

How would having two floors mean you are less likely to have a break in?
Have you ever lived in a flat? Does t feel weird to not go upstairs to bed. You'll be future proofing too!

minniemoll · 11/12/2019 00:00

I wouldn't like sleeping on the ground floor - I like to have my windows open at night when it's hot and I'd be afraid of break-ins. And random cats jumping in....

DramaAlpaca · 11/12/2019 00:04

I grew up in a bungalow, as did DH. It's fine. Both of us lived in very safe areas and don't remember our families ever worrying too much about having windows open. We have a house with stairs now, my creaky old knees would love to be living in a bungalow.

MrsJ28903 · 11/12/2019 00:07

I have lived in a flat! I hadn’t really thought of comparing it to that. Confused I had to walk up two flights of stairs to get to my flat though so it wasn’t ground floor!

I think I’ll make a viewing appointment.

Again, Australian here. I have lived in the uk with stairs and it’s such a pain. All on one level feels as if everything is “just there”. I found the stairs made everything such a hike.

Purpleartichoke · 11/12/2019 04:36

We all have bedrooms on the ground floor. I feel perfectly safe. Someone who breaks in isn’t going to be deterred by a stair case.

Yoohoo16 · 11/12/2019 07:07

I’m about to leave my bungalow for a house and I can’t even tell you how much I’m going to miss it.

RumRumRum · 11/12/2019 09:02

The only thing I didn't like about living in a bungalow was the bathroom situation - if I wanted to have a bath mid day and there were guests over then I'd feel very exposed walking back to my bedroom. Same for if I wanted to do a poo it felt very public compared to in a house where you can just go upstairs (if that makes sense?). Otherwise loved living in a bungalow

mumwon · 11/12/2019 21:17

re windows - you shut the other windows & have small top windows open or you have locked window constrictors so the windows can only be opened with the key. Anyone trying to get into out top windows would get stuck! What I like is that I don't have to walk upstairs to talk to someone or ask them something...

Countmeout · 12/12/2019 10:07

I lived in a bungalow as a teenager. I hated it. Will never live in one again. Everything too close. I’m shaping up for my last move and will be buying a house with stairs and fitting a stannah as needs arise.

XingMing · 12/12/2019 16:25

People who go up and down stairs regularly tend to stay fitter to older ages.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 12/12/2019 16:32

I found you get unfit very quickly in a bungalow also agree with the bathroom mention from a pp - still love ours though. You quickly get over living on one level ie the bedrooms.

thirteenbooks · 12/12/2019 17:56

We are definitely tidier since moving to our bungalow! Everything seems easier to out away Grin

Got used to sleeping on the ground floor within a couple of weeks. Love being able to watch the birds in our back garden from the bed! You could have motion activated lights if you were worried about break ins?

Troels · 12/12/2019 18:24

I spent most of my adult life in a bungalow, raised the kids in one until recently. Stairs are overrated.
My bungalow was much more tidy, no stuff waiting to go upstairs, Dh regularly trips up the stairs, Dd and I have managed to fall down them once.
No worry with windows open at night, we had a small one to open like someone else has mentioned.

TheNavigator · 12/12/2019 18:34

We have an en suite as well as a family so no worries with public bathing. We also live in a safe area so happily leave our windows open. I love being detached rather than in a semi and I keep fit going for a run so don’t need stairs. I really can’t think of a down side to our bungalow.
