Unjamming a swivel plug

We have a plug that swivels and it is jammed in the closed position. Any ideas for trying to free it gratefully received. I have tried using a mallet on a wooden spoon, yes weird I know but thought it would be softer than a hammer. Anyway that didn't work. I think these things can get a bit of grit that jams them shut.
Thanks for all ideas!

I don't know what a swivel plug is. Post some pics please.

Engineering summarised.

If it moves and shouldn't - use gaffer tape.

If it doesn't move but should - use wd40.

if it is a metal plug in a washbasin. try lifting one edge with blu-tak or the point of a nail file.

Thanks for all your tips. I have been away for a few days so got back and tried wd40 and then metal nail file - tip broke off.... plug still stuck!
Think I will need to get whole thing taken out and replaced with "normal" plug.

I know exactly what you mean- the plug spins on a central axle. You might be able to poke it open by pushing up from below - messy job as you’ll have to unscrew the trap (bucket under)

I have one of those and mine got wedged shut also.
I sprayed the whole thing with limescale remover the wrapped the head of a flat head screwdriver in an old face flannel and gently tapped the screwdriver with a hammer.
When that didn't work, I gave it a hefty tap and that did the trick.😀
We now always keep the swivel bit in the 6 o'clock position so we know which part to tap if it happens again.

Should have said, clearly, I put the wrapped head of the screwdriver on the central disc before hitting it.

Pickachew yes that is it.

I did gentle hammering but didn't work. Maybe one big one - nothing to lose!

Limescale remover is a good call, that could buy you the extra teeny bit of wiggle room

Try boiling water and if that doesn't work try ice, might expand it a little bit and free it

I have regretfully concluded that nothing is as dependable as a rubber plug on a chain.
