Never decorated myself! How do I avoid splattering everything?!

For several reasons the time has come for me to attempt some decoration by myself!

How do I repaint ceilings without splattering everything else?! Do I just have to cover the entire room in sheets or is there a technical trick that will save a lot of mess?!

Remove as much as you can from the room. Stick 'roll and stroll' carpet protector on the flooring and cover everything else with dust sheets. Don't load up the roller with too much paint and it shouldn't spatter as much

Yes just make sure you cover everything properly. And if you are anything like me be prepared to get paint hair 😁

Smidge001 · 08/12/2019 20:52

As pp said, (1) dont put too much paint on the roller, and (2) move it firmly, and SLOWLY.

Where a cheap shower cap to keep your hair clean.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 08/12/2019 21:31

As I thought. There’s no quick tricks!

Moving the furniture by myself will be a job in itself!

I think i’ll have to tackle the ceiling one day and the walls another.

Keep a damp cloth to hand in case you get paint splatters on the walls. If the splatters dry you’ll end up with odd ridges and raised bits on the walls.

Keep reminding yourself that the exercise must be doing wonders to tone your triceps and shoulders.

Don’t buy cheap paint - you’ll need more layers

It's a terrible time of year to be decorating tbh, especially a ceiling where it's so easy to miss bits, because the natural light is so poor and days are short. If it can wait until spring then I'd wait. If you proceed then be prepared to touch up bits you've missed for several days/weeks. I usually go round with a small roller once the second coat is done and go over the bits that need it - a ceiling is trickier. You might find a roller extension pole useful. There's always something that needs touching up however careful and methodical you are.

Paint the ceiling in the direction in which the sun comes into the room. So, from the window towards the opposite wall. So you don’t get shadows that will do your head in later.

Excellent tips. Thank you so much!

It’s seriously overdue but will definitely be an after Christmas project so leaving it a few extra weeks will be no problem!

I worked as a painter/decorator for a while. There is no easy way.

Remove everything you can (including the lampshades) - makes moving about easier. Cover everything else.

Damp cloth ready is a must.

Cut in (paint) round the edges of the ceiling and around light fittings with a brush first.

Rollering away from the window/s in direction of light - on the final coat at least - is a MUST.

If you can beg, borrow, or steal an extendable pole do that rather than work off a step ladder.

A: it's easier and faster - and you can see what you are doing.
B: It's a lot safer.
