Any tips on removing the smell from smokers house? We aren't sure the smell is from smoking, house was unoccupied for year but I have strong suspicion it was

Repainting I'm afraid. The smell has a way of seeping into walls....is there carpet present?

we have 3 more rooms to remove it from. It will be gone by the end of day today.

Painting is the goal but we have so much wallpaper to remove, it takes long. I wonder if it's wroth painting what we can - like the sealing, while removing wallpaper.

I wouldn't paint anything until you're ready to do the whole thing. In the meantime, you could spray and wipe it with a dettol and water solution.

I think sugar soap is good for cleaning walls and ceilings in rooms that have had smokers.

Wallpaper really holds the smell.

Strip the lot and wash the walls with sugar soap.

Wash all paintwork/cupboards/surfaces as well.

I seen on Location Location Location' that they had to remove the plaster back to brick and start again to get the smell out of a house.

That had obviously been the house of a heavy smoker though, hopefully yours isn't so bad if your not quite sure its smoke that you're smelling.

We bought a house from a heavy smoker and it took about three years before the residue of the smell finally went altogether. Despite painting the woodwork and doorframes etc several times since, we find that it still goes yellowish far more quickly than you'd expect - even after a couple of decades.

When you're cleaning, you need to get behind radiators.. the heat from them releases the smell as though someone has just stubbed out a cigarette before you got home!

My mother bought a flat in Glasgow that she had to take back to bare brick to get rid of the smell. I can well believe the location location location anecdote above

Wallpaper needs to come off, no point cleaning it. Hire a steamer, get some mates round, bribe with pizza and beer and just try and get it all off in a weekend. Then give it time to really air out and see if that helps
