How to change our address with numerous providers…

SecondaryBurnzzz · 06/12/2019 10:41

We are hopefully moving soon and it has just occurred to me that we will need to change our address on lots of supplier accounts. Is there a quick and efficient way of doing this or do I have to call up 30 different help desks to achieve this?
Any advice would be gratefully received
Thanks in advance

I don't know.

I moved house last year and spent at least a day with paperwork and laptop to hand contacting ALL of our utility accounts/insurers/DVLA etc. Some you really do need to speak with personally - in particular home insurances as some aspects of the house/contents may be different to your previous property.

Some I could manage online too.

Now would be a good time to compile lists of what/who/how to contact. House buildings cover needs to be in place as soon as you exchange iirc - so before you even move in.

I wrote a list and did 90 per cent of it online. Easy. Set up a redirect with royal mail to catch them all

Set up a redirect with royal mail to catch them all

Definitely do this!

I set ours for 3 months - but only because I knew that any strays that went to the old house would be kept for me by the new owners. ( the odd letter still goes there a year later, so I keep in touch).

I did many of mine online - it surprised me that some of the ones I would have considered highly confidential were able to do online whereas some ie magazine subscription I had to phone up (and answer twenty security questions ) to change my address.

Definitely advise getting a postal redirect for at least 6 months to catch everything - and at the very least make sure it covers one Christmas and birthday cycle so you know you've told all your friends and relatives Grin

all the banks etc will also send a letter to the old address, as a double-check that the change is legit. So you definitely need a redirect. Be aware it takes a few days to set up, so get it in place as soon as you exchange contracts to start on completion day.

the ones to do on completion day are

  • house insurance; although you'll already be insured from exchange
  • car insurance
  • council tax
and take meter reads at both properties, then call suppliers.

shortly after:

  • driving licences
  • car v5

all the others can wait, keep a list. It is a bore but hopefully not something you need to do too often!

it is not for the new owners to deal with your post, beyond the odd item that slips through the redirect.

That's really helpful everyone, especially your list Mencken. It hadn't occurred to me that we could do so many once we're in (doh), that all seems more manageable. I will definitely do the mail redirection as well.
I need to arrange it so we have seamless wifi, will make sky a priority.
Thanks everyone Smile
