Hi looking at the alarm its going to need more than new batteries it is at least 10 years old and now beyond its useful life span. If its a rental you need to contact your landlord otherwise get an electrician out preferably one with some knowledge of BS5389-6 which are the domestic smoke alarm regs a installer from www.aico.co.uk/find-an-installer/ will have all the knowledge needed to do this kind of work. Probably not what you wanted to hear.

It looks like the outer case is hinged so could be pulled down and the battery removed.

I agree with @R1R2. It looks ancient. You can buy new ones such as on this site.

When that happens with mine I hoover it gently with the 'brush'. It gets rid of dust but also small spiders which can set the alarm off

I agree that it looks very old and time to replace. Regulations and best practice have changed a lot lately. Do you rent or own? If you rent, it's your landlord's responsibility and it's the law. if you own, it's your responsibility and you can choose to ignore it (at your peril...).

Generally these days you should have smoke alarms that are mains powered with a lithium battery back-up. The rechargeable batteries last 10 years which is the same as the sensors.

Ideally they should all be interconnected so that if one goes off, they all go off. This is usually done wirelessly - costs a bit more for the detector but a lot less for the installation.

As a LL my house currently meets the minimum standards (one CO detector in the room with the boiler and one smoke detector on each level in the hall/landing). But my upgrade is about 11 devices and about £500 to buy and install.

is a helpful guide to smoke detectors in the home.
