Would you live in a village with no shop?

Hi,

Just that really. Seen a house which we really like, in a really pretty village, 10 minute drive from DD's high school, with school bus, gorgeous gastro pub, but yes, no shop.

The closest would be only a couple of minutes drive away and the next well equipped village is only 5 or 6 minutes drive away, so hardly a trek. That said, I would have liked my DD to have the freedom to walk to the shops on her own. She can't where we currently live and this was something on our list. Not top of it though.

What are your thoughts? Would you? Do you?

Nope - a shop within a reasonable walk (10 mins) would be a dealbreaker for me.

RandomUsernameHere · 27/11/2019 19:52

Yes, I would live there. Lack of a shop wouldn't bother me as I tend to do one big shop a week. We live a short walk from a shop now and I very rarely use it. If there's a shop on your way back from work/school run you could just stop off there.

AutumnCrow · 27/11/2019 19:52

How far is your 'ten minute drive' and 'a couple of minutes drive' away in actual distance?

I grew up walking to school and shops (and cycling when I was a bit older) between 1 - 2 miles, and it was annoying but ok . We were just used to it.

oohnicevase · 27/11/2019 19:53

It wouldn't put me off .. you can go to a shop when you are doing your daily chores etc

SunshineCake · 27/11/2019 19:54

I live in a village and all we have his a church and a village hall. It's fine. We moved from a place where everything we needed was within walking distance to nothing was.

However, I can walk to a big supermarket in twenty minutes and drive to a shopping centre in ten.

Didntwanttochangemyname · 27/11/2019 19:55

I live in a village without a shop, the nearest is 15 miles away. Its absolutely fine, I'm just quite organised and have a big freezer!

ALadyofLetters · 27/11/2019 19:55

I do. It’s fine. You just have to be more organised than you can be if you live near a corner shop. I always have bread and milk in the freezer. Someone in the village sells eggs which has helped us out a few times!

Chilledout11 · 27/11/2019 19:56

It's fine. It's sounds like a beautiful location and you just get organised and buy milk in advance etc

SleepingStandingUp · 27/11/2019 19:57

The closest would be only a couple of minutes drive away! surely that's walking distance??

CherryPavlova · 27/11/2019 19:59

We don’t have a shop. Nearest village shop is a few miles. It’s not an issue as I just think ahead and pick things up when I’m on the way back from somewhere.

Knittedfairies · 27/11/2019 20:09

I'm not sure not having a shop would be an issue; what would be is driving my daughter hither and yon to facilitate her social life if there was an inadequate/no bus service.

jackstini · 27/11/2019 20:09

Yes. Just keep stocked up
No pub on the other hand would be a deal breaker!

taybert · 27/11/2019 20:10

We do, it’s fine as we don’t work or go to school in the village so we just pick stuff up when we’re out and about. We have a milk delivery and there’s always some bread and frozen veg in the freezer and it’s not really a problem.

lilgreen · 27/11/2019 20:11

Would put me off. Hate HAVING to get in the car.

OctoberLovers · 27/11/2019 20:12

The nearest shop here is about 40 minutes walk down a dangerous, 60mph 😲 bendy country road with no lights ..

Non driver.... I hate it as i cant go out for a walk on my own.... Partner or a taxi :/

OctoberLovers · 27/11/2019 20:14

We get a delivery / go to the big supermarket...
Thats not a problem....
The problem is i cant go anywhere on my own with getting a taxi, for a coffee, to the library...

There isn't a bus route from where we are to town....

lilgreen · 27/11/2019 20:14

Yes I agree, teens an villages can be a problem. DH said he really didn’t want to bring our DC up in a village as he hated not being able to get anywhere until he got a car. Bus service was 1 a day!

Greeni · 27/11/2019 20:15

I lived in a gorgeous village with no shop and to be honest it’s an absolute ball ache. ‘Oh the milks gone off I’ll pop to get some’ would mean getting organised, finding car keys, driving, finding parking space, paying for petrol etc just for a bottle of milk. I’ve moved and it’s so handy to have a shop, I wouldn’t live in a village without one again.

ThisBear · 27/11/2019 20:16

I used to work on a semi rural location and there some places were a five minute drive but a near impossible walk. Along a major A road, or down country lanes that were fast to drive along but not practical for popping to the shops. I find it really restricting because I don't like being in the car everyday, but there are plenty of people who aren't bothered by it. I would say, think very carefully and be very honest with yourself.

Autumntoowet · 27/11/2019 20:18

I do.
But if I could choose I wouldn’t. No shop, no pub...
I thought oh well, come on, don’t be lazy. But the truth is that walking to a shop or a pub would be lovely.
I am not going to starve or anything, absolutely, but if I could choose...

Gillian1980 · 27/11/2019 20:19

I wouldn’t be keen.

As a kid we lived 4 miles from the nearest shop, which was actually an old lady’s tiny front room. We weren’t allowed to cycle there alone so felt very restricted.

Now that I have a car it would be fine but I think it would be annoying for our kids - I remember how annoying I found it.

LesLavandes · 27/11/2019 20:21

It's fine. I was 5 miles from local farm shop and 10 miles from a supermarket. Had Ocado deliveries. It's just a way of life!

georgialondon · 27/11/2019 20:21

No way!

Bunney2020 · 27/11/2019 20:22

Currently, no. We have a shop at the end of the road and I can count on one hand how many times we've used it (and the last time they did they sold us mouldy bread and wouldn't give us our money back). But if we had kids probably not as I imagine there would be a lot more 'shit we need xxx' occurrences.

ButIGetUpAgain · 27/11/2019 20:23

Thanks for all the replies. Sounds pretty positive so far.

@SleepingStandingUp, not really. It's down a motorway Confused Though the image of me walking down the side verge in my slippers because we NEED MILK has tickled me Grin (FWI, I don't go to the shops in my slippers)

@jackstini, haha I said the same. That was worryingly high on my list.
