Full rewire

So we have had our house fully re-wired. We knew it needed this when we bought it so wasn't I expected.

The electrician was recommended through friends etc.
We've had full rewiring with the scope for 2 future extensions- so our new fuse board can accommodate this. Some things we asked just to be made safe and usable for 12ish months whilst planning goes through etc for extension phase 1. However some rooms are staying as they are so we obviously position new sockets, lights and light switches etc.

Here's the issue ... he has wired everything in as we have asked e.g double sockets where there were singles , moved lights etc, however some of these double sockets he has just put a single socket front on, additionally non- of the fixings are screwed into the back boards. We also asked for up/down lights outside at the front - which he has wired but not attached any lights too. Also where there should be a triple light switch he has attached two floating single light switches at the moment.
We need to re-plaster the whole house so I know we need to drop the covers off for that at some point.

This is costing us £3,300 so bit a small amount (we are yet to pay).

What would you do in this situation... is this the norm?! I feel very let down!

*the re-wire wasn't unexpected

*It's not a small amount of money

I could have written this post. We have just finished phase 1 of a rewire (and have a £4k bill) and will have phase 2 done with our kitchen and bathrooms early next year. It’s an older house and quite frankly the electricians have trashed it. All of the sockets are floating in giant holes in the plaster work. My DH has had to go round attaching the sockets to the wall (and in most cases insert a wooden back plate as the holes are too deep). I have had to keep calling them back to fix and tweak things that should have been done the first time. They were recommended by neighbours and also independently by our plumber who we have known for years and years. I’m beyond disappointed with the finish, but the other tradesmen shrug and say ‘that’s electricians’. So no magic fix, I’m afraid. But you’re not alone!

Unless you specify otherwise the rewire should be left ready for plastering so sockets off and holes around the back boxes is no shock - they don't need to sort that as you'll be plastering when it gets sorted anyway. Why pay for two people to do the same job? I think it depends exactly what you asked for really.

Sounds like he's done first fix and will be coming back to do second fix? It's normal to do what it sounds like here then come back to put new accessories on when plastering is done. You don't want plaster all over your new stuff.

Thank you.

We're newbies and have bought a fixer-upper so learning as we go along.

I grew up in a diy house for over 15 years but my dad is very handy so did most of it himself. Myself and my husband work full time so dont have the luxury of taking our time like he did back then.

Thanks for the reassurance anyway.

Ah that’s where ours is different. We are not replastering and he knows it. We are mostly filling and lining. But still they didn’t need to make such a mess!

Are you in England?

Did he install a consumer unit, or one or more new circuits, or work in your bathroom, wet sauna, hot tib or swimming pool?

"The electrician was recommended through friends etc"

Is he a qualified electrician who is a member of a self-certification scheme? The name of his scheme will typically be proudly displayed on his van, business card, invoice and certainly the certificate he gave you when work was completed.
