Letting to someone wanting to buy

Would you rent a house to someone who you knew wanted to buy it off you eventually? A lady in my town in her 80s owns a house and lives in the annexe next door. She rents the bigger bit presumably to live off for the rest of her life. Would you consider letting the house to a family if, once you no longer needed the annexe bit (for whatever reason), you would then sell it to the family renting. Or should I not even approach her via letter to suggest it? It's our dream house in the dream location or I wouldn't even consider it.

Nothing ventured nothing gained, worth asking!

Absolutely no certainty for you. She could live 15 years and then her estate goes to her family and you have no right to buy. What did you have in mind?

as PP said, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I would only do it if I had nothing to lose though. Eg, I wouldn't sell my existing house to rent this one on a very, very long shot.

It sounds like a very stressful way to live - would you be on tenterhooks?

I'd make an arrangement to buy before we rented. We could rent our house out to cover the cost of renting this one. I'm sure it would be legally complicated but not impossible to arrange. I'm wondering what would be the benefit to her/her estate? I'm not sure she's altruistic enough to do something for no benefit!

Maybe just make an offer to buy...
