Garden direction

I have been a bit hung up on getting a south or west facing garden. I currently have an east facing garden. But I’ve viewed a nice house with a north and one with a a north east facing garden. Will these be awful?

My garden faces west. Gets morning sun from the front which gradually moves round until it’s at the back door by 1pm until it finally sets at the back. So long as there is sun in some part of the garden, it’s not all doom and gloom. Depends on what is around to block it.

Certain plants grow nicely in the shade. However, my biggest bugbear with N facing gardens is that you’ll never get the sun streaming into the house. So you won’t be able to bask in the sunshine unless there is scope to make something of the S facing rooms/garden at the front.

I have a north east facing garden. I like it. In the summer there is always shade and sun.
You just have to plant according to your conditions.

The main rooms are south facing so would get sun in the house. I just don’t want a garden that’s just shade after 2pm!

I moved from east to west facing and I’ll never go back. It’s so much nicer to have sun in the evenings.

Will say the sun on the back of my house in the summer can be a bit much(west facing) in heatwaves we have to draw the curtains and no sun on patio for weekend breakfasts.

We have a north-east facing garden and in the summer months we have sun on the patio at the back of the house from morning, then it gradually moves down to end of the garden until about 6 pm. I’d like a bit more evening sun, but it’s really not so bad.

In the winter months, the lower angle of the sun means the patio gets less sun after our neighbours built an extension.

I guess a lot depends on trees and buildings surrounding the properties you have your eye on.

It’s really good that the main rooms are S facing. How big is the garden? Is it long? If it’s big enough, you’ll have sun in different spots any time of the day.
