I have a standard Victorian terrace with a small, cramped kitchen at the back, north facing so it's fairly dark (pic 1). I'm planning to knock down the wall between the hallway and the dining room and remove the door to the kitchen, and brick up the door to the garden, so that it's like pic 2 (but with wall and doorframe dividing kitchen from dining area).

The space is very narrow (1.9m) and having full size countertops along both sides makes it cramped. I'm thinking of replacing the worktops down one side with a half-depth counter and breakfast bar. Does this sounds like a good idea?? Any other design suggestions very welcome!

Ive seen kitchens that narrow turned into utility rooms, with storage and knocked down the dining room/hallway wall to make a kitchen diner , but you don't even need to knock down the wall if you like those build in diner style corner booths as they are super space saving. Would probably be a lot more cost effective as no need to most any walls or brick up doors.

I think the less deep cabinets on one side sound like a good idea. I’ve done that in a Property before and you can even get washing machines to fit.

Would extending be too expensive?

Do you have an example of the built in booths you mentioned raspberryk? Finding it hard to picture what you mean

Sadly not enough money for an extension JoJoSM2 Sad

Good to hear the less deep cabinets work well, I forgot to mention there is space for laundry in the cupboard off the dining room so don't need to think about fitting in a washing machine thank goodness!

Can you afford to do a single storey extension and open up the whole space ? I think the dining room is too big and the kitchen too small .. relative to each other .

I'm not sure how well it would work without dimensions, but can you run units all down the left hand side of picture 2? Then either a small unit or shelving on the other side of the kitchen area?

I can't do a link but if you type in to google images or pinterest "corner bench dining table"
