Internet when moving

I am moving this week and have tried to get my Post Office landline and broadband moved to my new house. They have said it takes 2 weeks from the actual date of moving for it to be connected atcthe new property.
Can anyone recommend an alternative provider who would be able to connect me on my moving day who is competitively priced as I am thinking of leaving the Post Office now?

You will probably find two weeks is standard for moving or for a new service. Ironic that something so modern and instant takes so damn long to sort out.

Thanks so much for replying, and yes I thought the same about how long it takes in this modern age Smile.

@SOT3 I have just moved and was promised my broadband would be in on the day after I completed. After many many phone calls it was finally installed 10 days later. Apparently Open Reach have to physically go out to the nearest green box and flick a switch even thought the previous owner had broad band until the day of completion. yeah I don't believe that for a minute! I don't know anyone who has successfully got broadband installed on the day they move in.

Thank you Blobby for replying, sorry that you had that bad experience as I can imagine how stressful and annoying that was for you.

(Sorry that was me OP with a different name as I forgot I am replying on a different device).

It’s a total ballache whoever you are with. I spent 3 weeks relying on 4G when we moved. DH works from home and had to spend 3 weeks working at my sister’s house. I’m amazed the system doesn’t work better in this day and age.

I would look at upgrading your phone to unlimited data - some good offers about eg Vodafone £30/mont, 3 £25/month. Or buy a wifi dongle you can top up , about £50 with quite a bit of data - handy when you go away camping in the UK too.

Hmm. I moved 2 months ago. I called Virgin (supplier at old house), said I was moving in 3 weeks. Confirmed an appointment for the day after I moved. Engineer arrived, did stuff, broadband and telly all sorted within 30 mins of his arrival.

CointreauVersial · 19/11/2019 21:33

We had three weeks without internet, even though we informed them well ahead of the move, and used the same cable provider as the previous owner (so there was absolutely no installation required). I've no idea why it took them three weeks to effectively flick a switch.

CointreauVersial · 19/11/2019 21:34

(this was also Virgin)

madcatladyforever · 19/11/2019 21:36

I asked my son about this because I'm moving soon and he said he arranges it two or three weeks before moving in day and it's there when you move in. That's what he does.

Tolleshunt · 19/11/2019 21:37

Amazing it’s still so slow, isn’t it?! It’s really shit, almost as though they somehow don’t realise we’re all reliant on it these days. No doubt they want you to contact them over the internet, too Grin

What do people do in the meantime? Wireless dongle? Does that work for broadband telly?

FlamingoAndJohn · 19/11/2019 21:38

I had Virgin fitted the day I moved in.

SC10 · 19/11/2019 22:23

Thanks again for all the replies and helpful advice. Those saying they arranged it before moving is interesting as the Post Office told me yesterday that I can only order it to be installed elsewhere after I have left this property or that if I wanted to put a request in to transfer they would need to terminate my internet here first (yesterday) if I wanted the 2 week wait to start earlier than on Friday. That would leave me with no internet here for the few days before I move when I am trying to organise so many things as you can imagine! I felt the customer service was very poor and disinterested and wouldn't mind finding an alternative provider now.

MarshallPNutt · 19/11/2019 22:44

So the post office would not be able to provide two connections for someone with two houses?

No way - they were just not thinking it through when advising you.

BT took a few weeks after move in for me but I needed a line connecting also so they needed access to the house.

At a prior home Virgin were able to get it ready for Day 2.
